Himachal Pradesh News : Traffic restored on 65 roads in Lahaul-Spiti after heavy snowfall; several key routes still blocked
Traffic restored on 65 roads in Lahaul and Spiti Lahaul and Spiti district continues to grapple with transportation challenges following heavy snow on January 23 and 24, which severely disrupted road connectivity across the region. Of the total 290 roads in the tribal district, only 65 have been restored to traffic so far, according to official sources. Swift action by the Border Roads Organisation has helped restore the crucial Manali-Leh highway between Manali and Keylong, re-establishing connectivity of Lahaul and Spiti with the rest of Himachal. Another important road connecting the remote Pangi region of Chamba district with the Lahaul Valley has also been restored via Kadu Nala on the Sansari-Killar-Thirot-Tandi road, improving access to the Pangi Valley. Several key routes still remain blocked. The Darcha-Sarchu and Darcha-Shinkula roads are still closed to traffic due to heavy accumulation of snow, hampering movement towards higher-altitude areas. The PWD is facing difficulties in reopening several link roads that connect villages with the district headquarters at Keylong, affecting daily transportation and supply of essentials. The Sumdo-Losar road has been partially restored and is currently open only for 4x4 vehicles, officials said. Meanwhile, weather conditions in the region turned cloudy on Monday, raising concerns about further delay in restoration work. PWD authorities said the reopening of all roads will take considerable time as snow accumulation is unusually high this season. Restoration efforts are continuing on a war footing, with priority being given to main highways and vital link roads to ensure normalcy in the region.

Income tax law comes into force from April 1: FM Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said the Income Tax Act, 2025 would be implemented from April 1 and rules and tax returns forms would be notified shortly. Beginning April 1, the Income Tax Act, 2025, will come into force replacing the six-decade-old tax law and the changes made in tax laws in 2026-27 Budget will be incorporated in the new legislation. In her Budget speech in the Lok Sabha on Sunday, she said, “This (direct tax code) was completed in record time and the Income Tax Act 2025 will come into effect from first April 2026. The simplified income tax rules and forms will be notified shortly, giving adequate time to taxpayers to acquaint themselves with its requirements.” The forms had been redesigned, such that ordinary citizens could comply without difficulty, she added. The 2025 I-T law is revenue neutral with no change in tax rates. It has only made direct tax laws simple to understand and removed ambiguities, thereby reducing scope for litigations. It reduces text volume and sections by about 50 per cent vis-a-vis the 1961 Income Tax Act. The new law simplifies the tax timeline by doing away with the distinction between the assessment year and the previous year, replacing it with a single “tax year” framework. It also allows taxpayers to claim TDS refund even when ITRs are filed after deadlines, without any penal charges.

‘Three to four people dying by suicide in West Bengal everyday due to SIR anxiety’, says CM Mamata Banerjee West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday claimed that three to four people are dying by suicide every day in the state due to anxiety over the ongoing SIR exercise. Banerjee, addressing a programme at Red Road on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, asserted that the Election Commission and the central government must take responsibility for the deaths. "More than 110 people have already died; everyday three to four people are dying by suicide out of SIR anxiety," she said. The special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is underway in the state ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. Banerjee also accused the BJP of conspiring against Bengal, and claimed that icons of the country like Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Bose and B R Ambedkar were being insulted.
