Himachal Pradesh is preparing to take a major step towards sustainable public transportation as the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) gears up to introduce 297 electric buses along with four new electric depots across the state. The initiative aims to provide cleaner, safer, and more reliable travel while reducing the environmental impact of public transport.

The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri during the 163rd meeting of the HRTC Board of Directors held on Thursday, where the corporation’s operational performance, passenger facilities, and future transport plans were reviewed.

During the meeting, officials assessed the trial runs and overall readiness for the phased deployment of the electric bus fleet. Agnihotri said the state government is committed to transforming HRTC into a modern and environmentally responsible public transport system that offers greater comfort and convenience to commuters.

He emphasized that the addition of electric buses, supported by dedicated e-depots, will play a significant role in promoting green mobility across Himachal Pradesh while enhancing the quality and reliability of public transportation.

The Deputy Chief Minister also expressed concern over the shortage of tyres within HRTC and instructed officials to ensure that bus services are never affected due to the lack of tyres, spare parts, or other essential materials.

He directed the department to maintain sufficient inventory and establish advance contingency plans to guarantee uninterrupted bus operations and prevent inconvenience to passengers.

The meeting was attended by HRTC Vice-Chairman Ajay Verma, Additional Secretary (Transport) Onkar Chand Sharma, Managing Director Dr. Nipun Jindal, and other senior officials, who discussed measures to further strengthen the state’s public transport network.

With the upcoming rollout of electric buses and supporting infrastructure, Himachal Pradesh is moving closer to building a cleaner, more efficient, and passenger-focused transport system.
