The demand for a permanent ban on the Kinner Kailash Yatra has intensified after the Dev Samaj of Kinnaur appealed to the Himachal Pradesh government to suspend the pilgrimage indefinitely. The community has raised serious concerns about environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and the preservation of the region’s sacred cultural heritage.

A memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner, urging the state government to take immediate action and permanently close the pilgrimage route.

According to Dev Samaj convener Parmeshwar Singh Negi, although the district administration had officially suspended the yatra following protests by local residents, pilgrims continue to visit the sacred site without official regulation. He said the absence of controlled management has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of visitors.

Negi explained that when the pilgrimage was organised officially, authorities allowed only a limited number of devotees each day. However, with no effective monitoring now in place, the unrestricted influx of pilgrims is putting additional pressure on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. He also clarified that the Dev Samaj represents the broader local community and not only the Kaardars of local deities.

In its memorandum, the Dev Samaj claimed that the presence of more than 1,500 pilgrims has accelerated environmental damage in the region. The organisation alleged that increasing human activity is contributing to the degradation of biodiversity and the melting of centuries-old glaciers surrounding Kinner Kailash.

The community, which considers the entire mountain range and its surrounding forests sacred, expressed concern that rising tourist footfall is polluting natural water sources and damaging medicinal herbs and rare alpine flowers that hold significant religious importance in local traditions.

The memorandum further stated that local deities have advised residents to stop the pilgrimage in order to safeguard the area’s delicate ecological balance and preserve its spiritual heritage for future generations.

The latest appeal is expected to reignite discussions over balancing religious tourism with environmental conservation in one of Himachal Pradesh’s most ecologically sensitive regions.
