Shimla: In a unique blend of renewable energy and social welfare, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced that 25% of the revenue generated from its ambitious 100 Green Panchayat Initiative will be dedicated to the welfare and upliftment of orphans and widows across the state.
The decision reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of green energy projects reach vulnerable sections of society while promoting sustainable development at the grassroots level.
What is the 100 Green Panchayat Initiative?
Under the flagship programme, the state government is setting up 500 KW ground-mounted solar power plants in 100 gram panchayats across Himachal Pradesh. The initiative aims to increase renewable energy generation, reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, and create additional revenue streams for rural communities.
To strengthen the social impact of the project, the government has revised the revenue-sharing formula for income generated from these solar power installations.
New Revenue-Sharing Model Explained
According to the revised framework:
- 20% of the revenue will go to the Himachal Pradesh government.
- 20% will be allocated for operation and maintenance of the solar projects through HIMURJA.
- 10% will be directly provided to HIMURJA.
- 25% will be transferred to the respective gram panchayats for local development works.
- 25% will be allocated to the Social Justice and Empowerment Department to provide financial assistance to orphans and widows residing in the concerned panchayats.
This model ensures that the economic benefits generated through clean energy are shared across multiple stakeholders, including local communities and socially disadvantaged groups.
CM Sukhu Highlights Inclusive Development
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the initiative represents a major step toward combining environmental conservation with social responsibility.
According to the Chief Minister, the state government has launched several welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable and underprivileged citizens. He emphasized that these efforts are creating equal opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and helping them compete on par with others.
Better Financial Security for Vulnerable Families
The Chief Minister noted that the additional financial assistance generated through the solar projects will strengthen the economic condition of orphans and widows. The support is expected to create more opportunities for employment and self-employment, helping beneficiaries achieve greater financial independence and long-term security.
He further reiterated that the state government remains focused on the social and economic empowerment of marginalized communities through targeted welfare programmes.
