In a significant step towards improving healthcare access for elderly citizens, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Dharamshala has launched a dedicated Sunday outpatient department (OPD) named “Matri-Pitri Sewa OPD.” The initiative was introduced on the occasion of Parents Day and aims to provide convenient and compassionate medical care for senior citizens who often struggle to visit healthcare facilities during regular working days.
The new Sunday OPD has been designed to address a growing challenge faced by many families. With busy work schedules and professional commitments, working individuals are often unable to accompany their ageing parents for routine medical check-ups and consultations. As a result, many elderly patients postpone treatment, increasing the risk of delayed diagnosis and complications from chronic illnesses.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Atul Gupta, President of IMA Dharamshala and a renowned paediatric endocrinologist, said the programme reflects India’s long-standing tradition of respecting and caring for parents.
He highlighted the importance of the Sanskrit teaching, “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava,” emphasizing that elderly citizens deserve dignity, respect, and timely medical care.
“Parents spend their lives caring for and supporting their children. As they age, it becomes our collective responsibility to ensure they receive quality healthcare and emotional support. Through the Matri-Pitri Sewa OPD, we aim to create a patient-friendly environment where senior citizens can access medical guidance without the stress of crowded healthcare facilities,” Dr. Gupta said.
Special Focus on Age-Related Health Issues
The Sunday OPD will provide consultations and medical guidance for a wide range of age-related health concerns, including:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- Thyroid Disorders
- Heart Diseases
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Respiratory Conditions
- Nutritional Deficiencies
In addition to treatment, doctors will also offer advice on preventive healthcare measures, vaccination, healthy ageing practices, medication management, and lifestyle modifications to help senior citizens maintain a better quality of life.
Rising Elderly Population Makes Initiative Timely
Dr. Gupta noted that India’s elderly population is expanding rapidly, making geriatric healthcare one of the country’s emerging public health priorities. He stressed that regular health monitoring and early medical intervention can play a crucial role in preventing serious complications associated with chronic diseases.
According to healthcare experts, timely check-ups and preventive care can significantly improve the overall health and independence of senior citizens, reducing the burden of advanced medical conditions.
Doctors Volunteering for Community Service
The initiative is being operated through the voluntary efforts of doctors associated with IMA Dharamshala. Medical professionals have pledged to dedicate a portion of their Sundays and holidays to serving elderly patients, demonstrating the association’s commitment to community welfare and social responsibility.
IMA Dharamshala has also urged families to prioritize preventive healthcare and ensure that ageing parents receive the care, attention, and respect they deserve.
With the launch of the Matri-Pitri Sewa OPD, Dharamshala has taken an important step toward strengthening elderly healthcare services and creating a more supportive healthcare ecosystem for senior citizens and their families.
