Jai Ram Thakur Claims BJP Wave in Himachal After Panchayat Poll Results, Targets Sukhu Government
Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Monday claimed that the results of the recently concluded Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections have highlighted growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling Congress government in Himachal Pradesh.
Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Monday claimed that the results of the recently concluded Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections have highlighted growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling Congress government in Himachal Pradesh.
In a statement issued in Shimla, Thakur alleged that the Congress-led government, headed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, was aware of an impending electoral setback and had therefore attempted to delay the local body elections. He further claimed that despite these efforts, voters across the state overwhelmingly supported candidates backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to Thakur, the election results reflect what he described as increasing resentment among the public towards the Congress government’s performance over the past three and a half years. He argued that the mandate received by BJP-supported candidates in gram panchayats, urban local bodies and Zila Parishads signals a significant shift in public sentiment.
BJP Sees Poll Results as Indicator for 2027 Assembly Elections
The former Chief Minister asserted that several senior Congress leaders, including ministers, MLAs, the Deputy Chief Minister and even Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, faced rejection from voters in their respective political strongholds during the local elections.
Thakur said the strong performance of BJP-backed candidates demonstrates that the Congress is gradually losing public support in the state. He further claimed that the election outcome could be an early indication of the political mood ahead of the 2027 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
Congress Accused of Failing to Deliver on Promises
Taking aim at the ruling party, Thakur alleged that the Congress came to power in the 2022 Assembly elections on the basis of promises and guarantees that remain unfulfilled. He claimed that voters had used the local elections to express their dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.
“The people have given their response through the ballot box,” Thakur said while highlighting what he described as the BJP’s growing acceptance among voters across Himachal Pradesh.
Questions Raised Over Chief Secretary Appointment
Apart from electoral issues, the BJP leader also questioned the state government’s administrative decisions. Thakur criticized the delay in appointing a regular Chief Secretary and accused the administration of creating uncertainty within the governance system.
He asked why the government had not made a permanent appointment to the state’s top bureaucratic post and alleged that governance was being affected in the name of administrative reforms.
Political Temperature Rises in Himachal
The remarks come at a time when political activity in Himachal Pradesh is intensifying following the local body election results. While the BJP views the outcome as evidence of rising support among voters, the Congress has maintained that local elections do not necessarily reflect the broader political landscape of the state.
With the 2027 Assembly elections still some time away, both parties are expected to use the results to strengthen their respective narratives and mobilize support across Himachal Pradesh.
