Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should stop expecting a return to power in the 2027 Assembly elections, asserting that the state’s decades-old pattern of changing governments every five years would come to an end under the Congress government.

Speaking during the launch of the Youth Congress’ ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign at the Congress headquarters in Shimla, Sukhu also inaugurated the organisational election process of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing party workers and student leaders, the Chief Minister reflected on his long political journey, saying he had served the longest tenure as the state president of the NSUI, Youth Congress, and the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee. Expressing confidence in his government’s performance, Sukhu said the BJP should “forget about coming back to power” in the state.

The Chief Minister accused the previous BJP government of mismanaging the state’s resources and questioned why voters would choose the party again after its previous tenure.

Sukhu Highlights Recruitment Reforms

Sukhu also targeted the former BJP government over the recruitment paper leak controversy involving the erstwhile Himachal Pradesh Staff Selection Commission in Hamirpur. He said the scandal had crushed the aspirations of thousands of unemployed youth across the state.

Highlighting his government’s response, Sukhu said the commission was dissolved after the controversy surfaced and those found responsible were sent to jail. He further claimed that recruitment drives are now being conducted across various government departments without any incidents of paper leaks.

Criticism of Agniveer Scheme and MGNREGA Changes

The Chief Minister criticised the Centre’s Agniveer recruitment scheme, alleging that it had reduced the enthusiasm of Himachal Pradesh’s youth to join the armed forces. He also expressed concern over changes made to the MGNREGA programme, claiming they had negatively impacted the state’s rural population.

Call for Stronger Grassroots Outreach

Urging Youth Congress and NSUI members to strengthen their engagement with the public, Sukhu asked party workers to actively highlight the Congress government’s work in education, healthcare, employment, and rural development. He also encouraged them to counter the BJP’s narrative by taking the government’s achievements directly to the people.

With political activity gradually picking up ahead of future elections, Sukhu’s remarks are expected to intensify the political contest between the Congress and the BJP in Himachal Pradesh.
