Himachal Pradesh’s Cultural Heritage Gets a Boost as 3 Traditional Products Receive GI Tag
Shimla, India: In a significant achievement for Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural and artistic heritage, three traditional products — Ransingha, Handmade Galecha (Carpet), and Himachali Wood Carving Craft — have been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The recognition marks an important milestone in preserving the state’s traditional craftsmanship, indigenous knowledge, and centuries-old cultural identity.
With the latest additions, the number of GI-tagged products from Himachal Pradesh has increased to 15, further strengthening the state’s position as a hub of unique cultural and handcrafted products.
What Does the GI Tag Mean?
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is granted to products that possess unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to a specific geographical region. The certification helps protect traditional products from imitation, ensures authenticity, and enhances their value in national and international markets.
Experts believe that GI recognition can significantly improve branding, market access, and income opportunities for local artisans and producer communities.
The Three Newly Recognized GI Products
1. Ransingha: Himachal’s Traditional Musical Heritage
The Ransingha is a traditional metal wind instrument deeply rooted in Himachali culture. It is commonly played during religious ceremonies, festivals, and cultural celebrations across the state. Its distinct sound has long been associated with spiritual and ceremonial occasions, making it an important symbol of Himachal’s cultural identity.
2. Himachali Wood Carving Craft
Known for its intricate patterns, detailed motifs, and exceptional craftsmanship, Himachali Wood Carving reflects the state’s rich artistic legacy. The craft can be seen in temples, traditional homes, and decorative artifacts across the region. The GI recognition is expected to help preserve traditional carving techniques while expanding market opportunities for artisans.
3. Handmade Galecha (Traditional Carpet)
The Handmade Galecha, a traditional handcrafted carpet, showcases Himachal Pradesh’s vibrant weaving heritage. Produced by skilled artisan families and weaving communities, the carpet represents generations of craftsmanship and continues to provide livelihood opportunities in rural areas. The GI tag is expected to increase consumer trust and demand for authentic handmade products.
NABARD Played a Key Role in GI Registration
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), through its Himachal Pradesh Regional Office (HPRO), played a crucial role in facilitating the GI registration process. The organization worked closely with local artisans, producer groups, and stakeholders to document traditional production methods and complete the registration requirements.
NABARD also provided technical support, coordinated with relevant agencies, and helped mobilize communities to protect their traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.

GI Tag to Strengthen Artisan Livelihoods
Industry experts believe the GI certification will help protect these products from unauthorized copying and misuse while ensuring that genuine artisans receive the benefits of their craftsmanship. The recognition is expected to generate better market visibility, increase product value, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for thousands of artisan families across Himachal Pradesh.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Vivek Pathania, Chief General Manager, NABARD HPRO, described the GI registration as an important step toward preserving Himachal Pradesh’s cultural identity while supporting the economic growth of traditional artisan communities.
A Major Step Toward Preserving Himachal’s Cultural Legacy
The GI recognition of Ransingha, Handmade Galecha, and Himachali Wood Carving Craft highlights the growing importance of safeguarding India’s traditional arts and crafts. Beyond protecting cultural heritage, the move is expected to empower rural artisans, boost tourism, and strengthen the global identity of authentic Himachali products.
As demand for handmade and region-specific products continues to grow, these newly GI-tagged treasures are set to gain greater recognition both in India and around the world.
