As tensions flare in the Middle East, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has publicly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India’s silence following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

In a strongly worded statement, Gandhi asked whether India supports “the assassination of a head of state as a way to define the world order.” His remarks come amid escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Iran confirmed that its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in targeted strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. The development has sent shockwaves across the region and raised fears of a broader conflict.

“Silence Now Diminishes India’s Standing”

Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi said that escalating hostilities are pushing an already fragile region toward deeper instability. He stressed that nearly a crore Indians living in or connected to the Middle East now face uncertainty.

“Security concerns are real,” Gandhi acknowledged. “But attacks that violate sovereignty will only worsen the crisis.”

He strongly condemned unilateral military actions, stating that both the strikes on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory actions against neighboring nations must be denounced.

“Violence begets violence,” he wrote. “Dialogue and restraint remain the only path to peace.”

A Call for Moral Clarity

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha emphasized that India’s foreign policy has traditionally been rooted in sovereignty and peaceful conflict resolution. According to him, this moment demands moral clarity.

“India must have the courage to speak plainly in defence of international law and human lives,” Gandhi said, urging Prime Minister Modi to articulate the country’s position clearly.

He directly questioned whether the Prime Minister supports the killing of a head of state as a new benchmark for global power politics.

Growing Regional Instability

The crisis intensified after former US President Donald Trump reportedly called on Iranian citizens to challenge their leadership, following the strikes. The unfolding situation has increased diplomatic pressure worldwide, as nations weigh their responses carefully.

With millions of lives potentially affected and geopolitical balances shifting rapidly, the debate over India’s stance has now taken center stage in domestic politics.

As global tensions rise, the question remains: Will India speak out, or maintain strategic silence?
