Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: Mostly Fair Weather Ahead with Isolated Rain and Travel Advisories for High Hills
The state is set to enjoy mostly fair weather over the next five days starting from May 13, 2024. While there might be some very light rain in a few high-hill areas, it’s expected to be minimal. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to rise by 2-3°C, staying at or above the usual levels for this time of year.

Shimla and other regions report clear skies and dry conditions, though light rain might occur in isolated high-hill areas like Kinnaur and parts of Shimla. The Darcha-Shinkula road area, however, faces challenging weather with potential avalanches and rock falls. Only one-way traffic is allowed from Darcha to Shinkula between 7 AM and 2 PM, subject to alternate day schedules and weather conditions. A new Western cyclonic disturbance is expected to impact the region starting May 17, possibly altering the weather patterns. The weather in Shimla is pleasant today, as reported by the Meteorological Centre. The sky over the summer capital is clear. In catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh, such as Satluj, Beas, and Ranjit Nagar, there’s no significant weather to note. Light rain might occur in isolated spots in Kinnaur and Shimla districts, but the rest of the state will remain calm and dry.

In the past 24 hours, the weather has been dry across the state. Lower hill areas like Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, and parts of Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur remained dry, and this will continue tomorrow. Middle hill regions, including parts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi, also experienced dry weather. High hills such as Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti, and parts of Chamba and Kullu saw the same dry conditions, which will persist tomorrow. There was no significant change in temperatures over the past day. Minimum temperatures were much lower than normal, while maximum temperatures were slightly below normal. Today, the lowest temperature was 3.9°C in Keylong, and the highest was 40.5°C in Neri. A new Western cyclonic disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan region starting May 17, 2024.

The Ministry of Earth Science and the Meteorological Department of India reported that there was no significant snowfall or rainfall in Himachal Pradesh today. However, this is expected to change as a Western disturbance is likely to impact the western Himalayas starting the day after tomorrow.

According to the Ministry of Earth Science and the Meteorological Department in Shimla, the current weather across major cities in Himachal Pradesh shows a range of temperatures and chances of rain. Keylong is the coolest, with a temperature of 17°C and a high 99% chance of rain. Kufri follows with a slightly warmer 20.3°C and a 31% chance of precipitation. Shimla records 24.6°C with a 25% chance of rain. Chamba and Sundernagar are warmer, at 32°C and 30.3°C respectively, with Chamba having a 29% chance of rain and Sundernagar having a 36% chance. Kangra tops the temperature chart at 36.1°C but has the lowest likelihood of rain at just 1%.
As of 8:00 AM on May 15, 2024, the weather in Lahaul and Spiti is clear across all major stations, making for excellent travel conditions. Keylong, Kaza, Sumdo, Udaipur, Tindi, Sissu, North Portal, and South Portal all report clear weather with no snow depth, and roads are open. However, some routes have specific advisories: the Darcha-Sarchu-Leh Road is closed, but the SKTT road from Tandi to Tindi and Sumdo to Losar is open. The Darcha to Shinkula route is open as per the advisory, including Darcha to Deepak Tal and Darcha-Shinkula-Padum-Kargil. Losar to Gramphu remains closed. As of May 15th, 2024, the weather in the Darcha-Shinkula road area is challenging with the possibility of avalanches and rock falls due to bad weather. Today, from 7 AM to 2 PM, only one-way traffic is allowed for 4X4 vehicles, trucks, 4X2 vehicles, and bikes traveling from Darcha towards Shinkula (Zanskar). This traffic regulation will follow an alternate day schedule. If it rains or snows, no vehicles will be allowed to pass. Travelers must follow the road specifications and avoid unnecessary stops between Darcha and Kargyak. Tourists must be extremely careful, as they travel at their own risk, and stay in safe locations if it snows. Hotel and homestay owners should inform their guests about these precautions.
