Crime against women in Himachal Pradesh has recorded a concerning rise during the first quarter of 2026, highlighting growing safety concerns across the state. According to official police data, 478 cases related to crimes against women were reported between January 1 and March 31 this year, marking a 16% increase compared to 375 cases registered during the same period in 2025.

The latest figures have raised concerns among law enforcement authorities as well as the State Commission for Women, prompting calls for stronger awareness campaigns and stricter preventive measures.

Murder and Harassment Cases Increase

Police records show that cases involving the murder of women nearly doubled in the first three months of 2026. A total of 11 murder cases were reported during the period, compared to six cases recorded in the corresponding quarter last year.

Incidents of molestation also witnessed a notable rise, increasing from 105 cases in 2025 to 117 cases this year. Similarly, kidnapping and abduction cases climbed from 106 to 110.

Authorities are particularly concerned over the sharp increase in cruelty against women cases, which jumped from 26 cases last year to 39 cases in 2026. Cases linked to immoral trafficking also doubled from three to six, while eve-teasing incidents rose from 27 to 36.

However, the data offered slight relief in rape-related crimes, with reported cases declining from 89 in 2025 to 78 in the current year. Two cases were also registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act during the first quarter of 2026.

Police Assure Strict Action Against Accused

A senior police official stated that strict action is being taken against individuals involved in crimes against women across the state. The officer said police teams are maintaining constant vigilance and ensuring immediate legal action in sensitive cases.

Officials also stressed that investigations are being conducted while protecting the dignity and privacy of victims.

Women Commission to Launch Awareness Drives

Amid the rising number of cases, the State Commission for Women has decided to intensify awareness campaigns, especially in vulnerable and rural areas.

Commission Chairperson Vidya Negi said the focus will remain on educating women about different forms of crime, legal protections and complaint mechanisms available to them.

She urged women not to stay silent in cases of harassment, violence or abuse and encouraged them to immediately approach police or relevant authorities for timely support and action.

Rising Numbers Raise Public Concern

The increase in crimes against women has once again sparked discussions around women’s safety, law enforcement preparedness and the need for stronger social awareness in Himachal Pradesh. Experts believe that along with strict policing, community participation and awareness at the grassroots level will play a crucial role in preventing such incidents in the future.
