New Delhi, July 16: Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and urged strong support from the Centre to take forward the state’s ambitious green initiatives. The Chief Minister outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at making Himachal Pradesh a completely sustainable and green state, emphasizing the need for adequate financial support.

In a detailed discussion with the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Sukhu discussed several key initiatives. The proposal to generate 1000 MW hybrid solar and wind power in Spiti region was the primary focus. The Chief Minister informed that this project could be facilitated by creating a green corridor by harnessing the solar, wind and hydropower potential of the Sutlej basin. He emphasized that this initiative would significantly contribute to the state’s goal of transitioning to green energy.

CM Sukhu also appealed to sanction loans to finance the fleet of electric buses under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) through NABARD. He pointed out that this shift towards electric buses is an important component of the state’s green initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable public transport.

Addressing the financial constraints faced by Himachal, Chief Minister Sukhu requested compensation to help Himachal Pradesh break free from the obligation to purchase thermal power. He underlined the state’s commitment to rely entirely on green energy in the near future, but discussed the need for financial support to achieve this transition smoothly.

During the meeting, CM Sukhu raised long pending power related issues. He demanded resolution of dues due to Himachal Pradesh from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and restoration of rights and assets of the Shanan project as the lease period has expired. He also discussed the issue of free power royalty from power projects under SJVN and NHPC and urged the central government to take a favourable decision.

The CM also spoke about the state’s efforts to promote tourism, especially to develop Kangra as a tourism capital. He emphasised the importance of expanding the Kangra airport, requesting the Centre to bear 50 per cent of the land acquisition cost and provide special grants for the expansion. Additionally, CM Sukhu proposed setting up a tourism Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to promote tourism, generate employment and boost economic growth, identifying Himachal Pradesh as an ideal starting point.

PM Modi listened attentively to the CM’s demands and requests and assured him of all possible assistance to support Himachal Pradesh’s green and developmental initiatives.
