Himachal Pradesh is experiencing generally fair and stable weather conditions as of mid-May 2024, with a forecast of rising temperatures and clear skies prevailing across most regions. While isolated high-hill areas might see very light rain, the overall weather remains calm, with temperatures trending upwards by 2-3°C. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla reports pleasant weather today, especially in the summer capital and key catchment areas like Satluj, Beas, and Ranjit Nagar. However, a new Western cyclonic disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan region starting tomorrow, potentially altering current conditions. Travelers in regions such as Lahaul and Spiti are advised to stay updated on road and weather conditions due to specific travel advisories issued for safety.

The weather today is pleasant, according to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla. The summer capital, Shimla, enjoys a mostly clear sky. In key catchment areas like Satluj, Beas, and Ranjit Nagar, there is no significant weather to report. Overall, the state is experiencing calm and stable conditions.

In the past 24 hours, the weather across Himachal Pradesh has been dry. This dry spell continued in the lower hills, including districts like Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, and the lower parts of Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur, and is expected to remain the same tomorrow. The middle hills, including parts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi, also experienced dry weather. High hills areas such as Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, and parts of Chamba and Kullu stayed dry as well, with no changes expected tomorrow. Temperatures have remained stable over the past 24 hours, with no significant changes in minimum and maximum temperatures. The minimum temperature was notably below normal, while the maximum temperature was below normal. The lowest temperature recorded was in Keylong at 5.7°C, and the highest was in Neri at 42.4°C. A new Western cyclonic disturbance is expected to impact the Western Himalayan region starting tomorrow.

According to the Ministry of Earth Science and the Meteorological Department of India, there hasn’t been any significant snowfall or rainfall in Himachal Pradesh today. However, this is expected to change starting tomorrow due to a Western disturbance that will likely impact the western Himalayas.

Kufri is slightly warmer at 21.2°C with a 35% chance of rain. Shimla’s temperature is 24.8°C with a 29% chance of precipitation. Chamba and Sundernagar are experiencing warmer weather, with Chamba at 34.4°C and a 31% chance of rain, and Sundernagar at 31.7°C with a 38% chance of rain. Kangra is the hottest among these cities, with a temperature of 35.5°C and the lowest chance of rain at just 1%.

 

As of 8:00 AM on May 16, 2024, the weather across Lahaul and Spiti is clear, making for good travel conditions in the region. The roads in Keylong, Kaza, Sumdo, Udaipur, Tindi, Sissu, North Portal, and South Portal are open and safe to use. However, there are some important updates to note. The road from Darcha to Sarchu is closed, and the route from Losar to Gramphu is also shut. Travelers heading from Darcha to Shinkula to Padum-Kargil should follow specific advisories. The ATR North Portal towards Darcha and the SKTT road from Tandi to Tindi are both open, as is the road from Sumdo to Losar. For those traveling from Darcha to Deepak Tal, it’s essential to check the latest advisories before setting out.

 

As of May 16, 2024, a travel advisory has been issued for Lahaul and Spiti due to current road and weather conditions. All types of vehicles are permitted to travel from the ATR North Portal to the end of Koksar Market until further notice. However, this allowance is subject to change based on the weather. The District Police of Lahaul and Spiti are managing traffic, ensuring safety for all travelers. Locals and tourists are advised to be extremely cautious due to the possibility of inclement weather, including snowfall. If snowfall occurs, it is important to find safe shelter immediately. Hotel and homestay owners should inform their guests about these precautions.
