Himachal Weather Update: Heatwaves and Hail were observed in more than Seven Districts including Shimla

Light rain is expected in some areas of the mid and high hills over the next three days, starting May 19, 2024. Meanwhile, a heat wave is likely to persist in the low and mid hills and the plains for the next 4 to 5 days. There is also a chance of a severe heat wave in certain parts of the low hills and plains.

Today’s weather update for Himachal Pradesh presents a mixed bag of conditions across the region. Keylong, the coolest spot, is set for a high chance of rain, while Kangra faces the peak of heat with minimal rain prospects. The region experienced mostly dry weather in the past 24 hours, with scattered rain and hail in specific areas, and temperatures remaining below normal. Notably, a yellow alert for heat waves has been issued for several districts, underscoring the need for caution. Additionally, travel on the NH-03 Manali-Leh Highway is regulated due to weather-related risks, emphasizing the importance of safety measures for travelers.

As reported by the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, today’s weather includes a partly cloudy sky with a chance of light rain. Some areas might experience light rain along with thunderstorms and lightning, especially in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti. Heat waves are expected in parts of Bilaspur, Una, Sirmaur, Solan, Kangra, and Hamirpur, with a yellow alert issued. There is also a possibility of light rain in some areas of Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Mandi.

 

In the last 24 hours, Himachal Pradesh experienced mostly dry weather. The lower hills, including Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, and the lower parts of Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur, stayed dry, but there’s a chance of rain in some spots tomorrow. The middle hills had some scattered rain in parts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi. The high hills, such as Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti, along with parts of Chamba and Kullu, saw isolated rain and snow, and this is expected to continue tomorrow. Temperatures have been steady, with both the minimum and maximum readings below normal. Kukumseri recorded the lowest temperature at 5.8°C, while Neri had the highest at 44.1°C. Hail was observed in Shimla, Dharamsala, Sundarnagar, Bhuntar, Una, Solan, Palampur, Gaggal, Mandi, and Bilaspur. Today, Himachal Pradesh has seen no significant snowfall or rainfall, according to the Ministry of Earth Science and the Meteorological Department of India.

 

According to the Ministry of Earth Science and the Meteorological Department in Shimla, Keylong is the coolest place in Himachal Pradesh today with a temperature of 18.7°C and a high 99% chance of rain. Kufri is a bit warmer at 23.1°C, with a 35% chance of rain. Shimla stands at 28.5°C with a 26% chance of rain. Chamba and Sundernagar are quite warm, with Chamba at 38.8°C and a 21% chance of rain, and Sundernagar at 39.5°C with a 24% chance of rain. Kangra is the hottest city today at 42.5°C, but it has the lowest chance of rain at just 1%.

The District Disaster Management Authority of Lahaul & Spiti has issued a travel advisory for the NH-03 Manali-Leh Highway, effective from May 18, 2024. The road is now open, but with specific regulations for traffic movement due to prevailing inclement weather conditions, including the risk of avalanches and rock falls. Vehicles will be allowed on alternate days, starting with one-way traffic from Darcha to Sarchu for 4×4 vehicles, 4×2 vehicles with chains, and heavy trucks between 7:00 AM and 12:00 PM on May 19. On May 20, traffic will flow in the opposite direction from Sarchu to Darcha. Motorcycles are currently restricted. Travelers are advised to proceed with caution, avoid unnecessary stops, and comply with vehicle specifications. All travelers and hotel owners need to heed these guidelines for safety, given the unpredictable weather and road conditions. Emergency contact numbers are provided for assistance.
