In a significant step towards promoting accessibility and empowerment for persons with disabilities, as many as 15 beneficiaries from different districts of Himachal Pradesh received artificial limbs during a special distribution camp held in Shimla on Tuesday.
The camp was inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta and organised by non-governmental organisation ACT Humane in partnership with the Himachal Pradesh State Red Cross Society at Lok Bhawan.
Beneficiaries from Una, Kangra, Rohru, Shimla and Sirmaur districts were provided with modern assistive devices free of cost, helping them regain mobility and improve their quality of life. The recipients were identified during a registration and assessment camp conducted by ACT Humane at the State Red Cross Building on June 4.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Governor Kavinder Gupta encouraged them to face life’s challenges with determination and confidence. He noted that while accidents and unforeseen events can affect mobility, initiatives such as these play a vital role in restoring not only movement but also dignity, self-esteem and hope.
The Governor praised ACT Humane for its continued humanitarian efforts and described the organisation’s work as a powerful example of selfless service. He also appreciated the collaboration between ACT Humane and the State Red Cross Society for making advanced assistive devices accessible to those in need without any financial burden.
Calling for greater awareness, Gupta urged persons with disabilities to recognise their strengths and capabilities. He emphasised that with proper support, self-belief and perseverance, individuals can lead independent, meaningful and fulfilling lives.
He further stressed the need for society to work collectively towards ensuring equal opportunities, accessibility and respect for persons with disabilities.
ACT Humane founder Harleen Kaur briefed the Governor about the organisation’s initiatives, highlighting that similar artificial limb distribution camps have previously been organised in Solan, Kangra, Dharamsala and Mandi, benefiting numerous individuals across the state.
Apart from distributing assistive devices, ACT Humane also extends financial support to economically weaker patients requiring medical treatment.
Harleen Kaur also underlined the organisation’s efforts to improve accessibility infrastructure by developing disability-friendly public spaces, including Children’s Park in Solan, Rani Jhansi Park and Brockhurst in Shimla. These initiatives have helped create more inclusive recreational spaces for wheelchair users and people with mobility challenges.
ACT Humane State Manager Yogesh Sharma also informed the Governor about the organisation’s ongoing welfare programmes and community outreach initiatives across Himachal Pradesh.
