A fresh political confrontation erupted on Sunday as Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh launched a sharp attack on the Congress and the INDIA bloc, accusing them of exposing an “anti-women stance” by opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

Addressing a press conference, Singh said the proposed legislation was a landmark step aimed at strengthening women’s participation in governance and decision-making. He stressed that the bill reflects a long-awaited reform that could reshape political representation in India.

“At a time when the nation was prepared for this historic move, the opposition chose obstruction over cooperation,” Singh remarked, alleging that political interests were prioritized over genuine women’s empowerment.

Calling the opposition’s approach a “historic betrayal,” the minister pointed out that while the Congress had advocated women’s reservation for decades, it failed to implement it during its tenure. “When a credible and constitutionally sound framework was finally introduced, they responded with procedural excuses and diversionary tactics. This clearly reflects a lack of intent,” he added.

Singh also highlighted the BJP’s internal structure, claiming that the party has already ensured over 33% representation for women within its organization. He contrasted this with what he described as Congress’s reliance on dynastic politics, stating that the BJP promotes women leaders based on merit, performance, and leadership capabilities.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP national vice-president and Rajya Sabha MP Saroj Pandey criticized the Congress leadership, alleging that women had long been treated merely as a vote bank.

“When the opportunity for real, structural empowerment came, Congress stepped back,” Pandey said. She also took aim at Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, questioning the credibility of slogans like “Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon” in the absence of support for key legislation aimed at empowering women.

“The country deserves answers,” Pandey added, expressing confidence that women voters across India would recognize these differences and respond through the democratic process.

The debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill continues to intensify, setting the stage for a broader political battle over gender representation and accountability in Indian politics.
