Shimla, May 2: Weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh took a sharp turn on Thursday, with heavy rain and strong winds lashing the state from early morning. In Shimla, a large tree was uprooted due to the intense downpour and gusty winds, crashing down near the IPH office between ISBT and the Tutikandi bifurcation.

The falling tree caused significant damage to three vehicles parked along the roadside. Fortunately, no pedestrians or moving vehicles were in the vicinity at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.

The fallen tree brought traffic to a standstill on the Tutikandi bifurcation route, leading to long delays and congestion. Authorities and municipal staff quickly arrived on the scene and worked to clear the debris. By the afternoon, the road was partially reopened, offering some relief to commuters.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow weather alert for the state, warning of continued adverse conditions until May 7. According to senior meteorologist Sandeep Sharma at the Shimla weather office, rainfall was recorded over the past 24 hours in Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Mandi districts. Solan reported the highest rainfall at 40 mm, while Bilaspur received comparatively lighter showers.

Sharma added that Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur have experienced consistent rainfall since Friday morning. The forecast indicates the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in the plains and mid-hill regions in the coming days. Some areas may also experience hailstorms, prompting the issuance of the yellow alert.

The department has advised the public to remain cautious, especially those traveling through hilly areas. Given the strong winds and persistent rainfall, there is a risk of more trees falling and potential landslides.
