The latest US military action was ordered by President Donald Trump, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The strikes were aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces accused of attacking American troops.
CENTCOM said the new strikes began at 6 pm Eastern Time in the United States, which was 3:30 am on Sunday in India.
“US forces began launching new airstrikes against Iran at the Commander-in-Chief’s direction,” CENTCOM said in a statement. The command added that the operation was intended to further reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and punish the forces responsible for the attack on US personnel in Jordan.
Two US Service Members Killed in Jordan
The fresh strikes came hours after CENTCOM confirmed that two US service members had been killed during Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. One additional American service member remains missing.
Four other US personnel were reportedly evacuated to hospitals in Jordan after the attack but were later discharged. The latest deaths have taken the total number of US service members killed in the Iran war to 16, while hundreds more have been wounded.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the fallen service members as heroes, saying their sacrifice would strengthen the US military’s resolve.
US Strikes Expand Across Southern Iran
Following the announcement of the fresh US operation, reports emerged of strikes hitting areas around the Iranian city of Sirik, which is strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz.
The scope of US military operations has reportedly expanded in recent days across southern Iran. Areas including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and locations near the Strait of Hormuz have faced attacks, while strikes have also been reported in other parts of the country.
Iranian reports have claimed that some attacks affected residential areas in addition to military targets. The extent of the damage and casualties remains subject to conflicting claims from both sides.
Iran Vows Retaliation Against US Forces
Iran has vowed to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz and retaliate against US military assets across the region.
Iranian forces have claimed attacks on American military facilities in countries including Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain. Iranian military officials have warned that continued US strikes could trigger even stronger retaliatory action and expand the conflict beyond the Middle East.
The confrontation has raised fresh concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Iran-Kuwait Attacks Add to Regional Tensions
The latest escalation follows an Iranian attack on vital oil infrastructure in Kuwait, which reportedly caused injuries and significant material damage.
The situation had already been deteriorating rapidly, with both Washington and Tehran exchanging strikes across the region. The conflict has also created growing concerns over energy supplies and the movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran Suspends Interim Deal Commitments
The latest developments came shortly after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned that the United States would face “unforgettable lessons” if it continued attacking Iran.
His remarks, broadcast on Iranian state television, also dismissed President Donald Trump’s signature as “worthless and invalid.”
An Iranian negotiator separately said that Tehran was suspending its commitments under an interim agreement reached roughly a month earlier, which had been intended to create a path toward permanently ending the fighting.
With the US launching new strikes and Iran promising further retaliation, fears are growing that the conflict could enter a more dangerous phase and further destabilise the wider region.
