In a major setback to Kullu’s adventure tourism industry, a massive fire broke out late Sunday night at the popular Babeli rafting point, reducing eight rafting boats to ashes and causing an estimated loss of nearly Rs 34 lakh to local operators.
The incident took place around midnight, when most rafting activities had already ended for the day. According to operators, all tourists had returned by around 6 PM, and the rafts were safely secured along the riverbank before the unexpected fire erupted.
The first warning came through a WhatsApp group message at around 12:09 AM, prompting rafting operators and nearby residents to immediately rush to the location. Despite their quick response, several rafts had already been completely engulfed by flames.
Residents and rafting operators worked together to control the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby equipment and surrounding areas. However, the blaze had already caused extensive damage before it could be brought under control.
The financial losses have affected four rafting operators. Pappu Thakur of Raison lost three rafts worth around Rs 10 lakh, while Raju from Babeli suffered a loss of two rafts valued at nearly Rs 6 lakh. Sher Singh of Maching also lost two rafts worth about Rs 6 lakh, and Dalip Jamwal of Raison lost one raft, causing a loss estimated at nearly Rs 12 lakh.
For these operators, the incident has come as a major blow at a time when Kullu witnesses a high influx of tourists and rafting remains one of the region’s most important adventure activities.
Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have started due to a nearby garbage fire or burning dry leaves that eventually spread towards the rafting area. Authorities have clarified that no individual has been held responsible so far, and there is currently no evidence suggesting any intentional act.
Kullu Superintendent of Police Madan Lal Kaushal confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The unfortunate incident has raised serious concerns over fire safety arrangements at riverbank storage locations. Local operators believe that stronger preventive measures and regular monitoring are essential to protect equipment and livelihoods, especially during the busy tourism season.
