In a significant development in the death of a 14-year-old Class IX student, the Himachal Pradesh Police have arrested a hostel warden and a school bus driver for their alleged role in an abetment to suicide case at a private convent school in Kangra district.
The Khundian Police arrested Abhishek Kumar, the hostel warden, and Rakesh Kumar, the school bus driver, on Wednesday. Both were taken into custody in connection with an FIR registered on July 5, a day after the student was found dead on July 4.
The case was initiated following a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Thamwa village. In his complaint, he alleged that four employees of the private school were responsible for driving his son to take the extreme step.
Based on the complaint, police registered FIR No. 26/2026 under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to Dehra Superintendent of Police Sandeep Dhawal, investigators launched an intensive search operation immediately after the FIR was registered. The investigation involved scientific and forensic examination with support from the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL), Dharamsala.
During the preliminary investigation, police found evidence indicating that the student had been strangulated, prompting investigators to examine every aspect of the case before drawing final conclusions.
Meanwhile, two other accused in the case—the school’s Managing Director, Bharat Singh, and Principal Gunjan Kumari—have obtained anticipatory bail. Police officials said both individuals are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
SP Sandeep Dhawal stated that the investigation is being carried out in a fair, impartial, and comprehensive manner. He added that further legal action will depend on the scientific evidence, forensic reports, and other findings gathered during the investigation.
The case has sparked concern in the region, with authorities assuring that every angle will be examined to ensure a transparent investigation and appropriate legal action based on the evidence.
