A man was arrested in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district on Friday for allegedly posting abusive comments and a video containing a death threat against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on social media, police officials said.

The accused, identified as Rajnish, a resident of Bhagot village in Hamirpur, was produced before a local court, which remanded him to four days of police custody for further investigation.

According to police sources, the action was initiated following a complaint filed by local resident Vishwa Sharma, who alleged that a video circulating on social media contained objectionable language directed at the Chief Minister along with a serious threat to his life.

During the investigation, authorities traced the social media account linked to the controversial video and identified Rajnish as the person allegedly responsible for uploading the content. He was subsequently called to the Bhota police post for questioning before being formally arrested.

Speaking on the matter, Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh said law enforcement authorities acted swiftly due to the sensitive nature of the allegations.

“The police responded promptly considering the seriousness of the complaint. A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions concerning abusive social media content, defamatory remarks and threats made against an individual,” the officer said.

The investigation is currently underway, and police are examining additional digital evidence related to the social media activity.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms and the legal consequences associated with posting threatening or defamatory content online.
