In a strong assertion of Himachal Pradesh’s rights over its water resources, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced that the state government will continue its efforts to secure permanent representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and recover pending arrears exceeding ₹4,000 crore.

Speaking to reporters, Sukhu said that having a permanent representative in the BBMB is a legitimate right of Himachal Pradesh. He revealed that although the BBMB Chairman had intended to meet him recently, the meeting could not take place due to his unavailability. The Chief Minister added that the state government would actively pursue the issue and strengthen its demand for a dedicated place in the board.

The Chief Minister also raised the matter of long-pending financial dues related to BBMB. He stated that the Haryana Government should submit an affidavit before the High Court confirming its willingness to pay Himachal Pradesh’s share of the pending arrears at the rate of 7.19 per cent.

Sukhu highlighted that despite a Supreme Court decision favouring Himachal Pradesh, the state is still waiting to receive the amount. He said discussions are already underway with the governments of Punjab and Rajasthan, and he plans to personally speak with the Haryana Chief Minister to resolve the issue.

Addressing another important national concern, the Chief Minister expressed worry over the increasing incidents of examination paper leaks, referring to the recent NEET controversy. He alleged that such incidents occurred during the BJP government’s tenure and claimed that similar cases had taken place in Himachal Pradesh during the previous BJP administration.

According to Sukhu, the earlier state government did not take strict action even after the paper leak controversy involving the Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Selection Board.

The issues of BBMB representation, pending financial dues, and examination transparency are expected to remain key political and administrative matters in the coming months, with the Himachal Government preparing to pursue its claims more aggressively.
