Shimla, one of India’s most popular hill stations, is experiencing a massive wave of summer tourists this season. Between May 1 and June 15, nearly 15 lakh vehicles entered the city, putting tremendous pressure on its roads and traffic infrastructure.
With schools across the country closed for summer vacations, thousands of families are heading to Himachal Pradesh to escape the heat. The growing number of tourists has led to frequent traffic congestion on major highways, city roads, and important tourist routes.
According to local hotel industry estimates, tourist accommodations across Himachal Pradesh recorded an average occupancy of 60–70% during weekdays, which increased to nearly 80–90% on weekends, reflecting the strong demand for travel in the region.
Shimla Police Introduces 5-Point Strategy to Control Traffic Chaos
To manage the rising vehicle load, Shimla Police has introduced a comprehensive five-point traffic management strategy. Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said that the tourist rush can be handled effectively if internal traffic bottlenecks are controlled in time.
The strategy focuses on:
- Deployment of additional police personnel and home guards.
- Increased use of interceptor vehicles and bike-borne traffic teams.
- Continuous monitoring by gazetted officers in different sectors.
- Promotion of alternative routes to reduce pressure inside the city.
- Creating public awareness through social media and traffic updates.
A total of 210 additional police personnel, home guards, and volunteers have been deployed at key locations. The number of bike-borne traffic officers has also been increased to 32, allowing authorities to respond quickly to traffic disruptions.
Breakdown of Heavy Vehicles Remains a Major Challenge
Despite the improved arrangements, the breakdown of heavy vehicles on Shimla’s Cart Road remains one of the biggest challenges. Since the road is narrow and acts as a lifeline for the city, even a single bus or truck breakdown can trigger long traffic delays.
To tackle such situations quickly, authorities have positioned three cranes in different sectors to remove stranded vehicles and restore normal movement as soon as possible.
Officials revealed that five vehicles broke down on Tuesday alone, while unauthorized stoppages by private buses and improper parking continue to contribute to congestion.
Alternative Routes Suggested for Tourists Visiting Nearby Destinations
Tourists travelling towards popular destinations such as Kufri, Narkanda, Theog, and Kinnaur are being encouraged to use the Shoghi-Mehli bypass route. The alternative route helps reduce traffic pressure inside Shimla and saves valuable travel time.
At present, around 800 vehicles are being diverted through the bypass route every day, helping authorities manage the increasing flow of tourists.
Police Appeal to Tourists for Responsible Travel
Shimla Police has welcomed visitors while urging them to follow traffic rules, park vehicles only at designated areas, and cooperate with officials by using suggested alternative routes.
Authorities are also actively sharing traffic awareness videos and real-time updates on social media to help tourists plan their journeys better.
As the summer holiday season continues, effective traffic management and responsible behavior from travelers will play a crucial role in ensuring that Shimla remains a comfortable and enjoyable destination for everyone.
