Shimla Grapples with Unprecedented Traffic Surge as Tourist Season Peaks
Shimla, one of India’s most popular summer destinations, is witnessing an unprecedented traffic crisis as a massive influx of tourists continues to overwhelm the city’s road network. More than 11 lakh vehicles have entered the hill station in just one and a half months, leading to long traffic jams, slow-moving vehicles, and increasing frustration among both tourists and local residents.
The ongoing tourist season has transformed Shimla’s major entry routes into congestion hotspots, with commuters often spending hours navigating through packed roads during peak travel periods.
Over 11 Lakh Vehicles Enter Shimla in 45 Days
According to official police data, approximately 8.5 lakh vehicles entered Shimla through the city’s three major entry points during May alone. The trend has continued in June, with nearly 3.8 lakh vehicles already arriving in the first half of the month.
The sharp increase in vehicular movement has placed immense pressure on Shimla’s infrastructure, particularly at key entry points including Shoghi, Totu, and Dhalli. During rush hours, traffic movement slows significantly, resulting in extended delays and frequent bottlenecks.
Police Intensify Traffic Management Measures
To address the growing congestion, Shimla Police have strengthened traffic management operations across the city. Shimla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Singh stated that around 210 police personnel and home guards have been deployed at strategic locations to regulate vehicle movement.
Authorities have also requested permission to retain nearly 70 additional personnel who were originally deployed during the Summer Festival. These reinforcements are expected to support ongoing traffic control efforts as tourist numbers continue to rise.
In addition, nearly 50 traffic volunteers and 32 traffic bike riders have been assigned across various locations to respond quickly to congestion and traffic-related incidents.
City Divided Into Five Traffic Control Sectors
To improve traffic monitoring and coordination, the district police administration has divided Shimla into five dedicated traffic management sectors. Each sector is being supervised by a gazetted officer responsible for ensuring smooth vehicle movement and minimizing disruptions.
Officials believe that sector-wise monitoring will help authorities identify problem areas more efficiently and implement quicker solutions during periods of heavy traffic flow.
Special Focus on Parking Areas to Reduce Congestion
Recognizing that parking-related bottlenecks contribute significantly to citywide congestion, police have deployed additional personnel at major parking facilities across Shimla.
The initiative aims to ensure smooth vehicle entry and exit from parking lots, preventing unnecessary road blockages and reducing pressure on nearby traffic corridors.
Alternative Routes Suggested for Tourists
Authorities are actively encouraging travelers to use alternate routes to avoid heavily congested stretches. Tourists heading toward Kufri, Narkanda, Theog, and Kinnaur are being advised to travel via the Shoghi-Mehli bypass.
According to police estimates, nearly 800 vehicles are currently being diverted to this route every day, helping ease pressure on Shimla’s primary entry roads.
Public Transport Promotion and Digital Awareness Campaign
Shimla Police have also launched awareness campaigns through social media platforms, sharing regular traffic updates and educational videos for tourists and residents.
Officials are encouraging visitors to opt for public transport wherever possible. Public buses have been permitted to operate on Cart Road, a move expected to reduce dependence on private vehicles and contribute to smoother traffic movement across the city.
Growing Tourist Popularity Raises Infrastructure Concerns
While the record tourist influx highlights Shimla’s continued popularity as a preferred summer getaway, it has also raised serious concerns about the city’s ability to handle growing traffic volumes.
With the peak holiday season still underway, authorities are expected to continue implementing additional measures to manage congestion and ensure a safer, more convenient travel experience for visitors and residents alike.
