After several days of scorching heat and rising temperatures across Himachal Pradesh, residents may finally get relief as the state is expected to witness rain and hailstorm activity starting May 29. The change in weather is likely to bring down temperatures significantly in several districts.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, an orange alert has been issued for Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi and Kullu districts for Friday. The weather department has warned of hailstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds at isolated places in these regions.
At the same time, a yellow alert has been issued for Kangra, Chamba, Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts, where thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected.
Officials said the weather conditions may continue on May 30 as well, with another yellow alert issued for multiple parts of the state. Light rainfall is also likely in the middle and higher hill regions on May 31 and June 1.
The upcoming spell of rain is expected to provide much-needed relief from the intense heatwave conditions that have affected daily life across Himachal over the past week. The Meteorological Department has predicted a fall of 2°C to 3°C in minimum temperatures, while maximum temperatures could drop by 2°C to 6°C during the next few days.
Weather experts stated that dry conditions continued across most parts of the state during the last 24 hours. Minimum temperatures remained 2°C to 3°C above normal, while maximum temperatures stayed 2°C to 4°C higher than average for this time of year.
Among major cities, Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 29°C, while Dharamsala touched 35°C. Kangra reported 36.8°C, Solan 35.4°C and Mandi 37°C. Sundernagar recorded 37.2°C, while Nahan also witnessed a high of 37°C. Tourist destinations Kufri and Kalpa remained comparatively cooler at 23.2°C and 23.8°C respectively.
Una continued to remain the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh with a maximum temperature of 43.2°C. On the other hand, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti was the coldest location in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 3.9°C.
The sudden shift in weather is expected to bring relief not only to residents but also to tourists visiting the hill state during the summer season. However, authorities have advised people to stay cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel in hailstorm-prone areas.
