The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued a strong directive to state authorities, asking them to clear all pending forest encroachments across the state by December 31, 2026. The order comes amid growing concerns over illegal occupation of forest land and its impact on the fragile ecological balance of the hill state.

The decision was passed by a Division Bench comprising Justice Vivek Singh Thakur and Justice Bipin Chander Negi while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to large-scale encroachments on forest land in Himachal Pradesh.

During the hearing, the court reviewed a status report submitted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF), Himachal Pradesh. According to the report, authorities identified a total of 13,335 encroachment cases across the state. Out of these, action has already been taken in 7,925 cases, while 5,410 cases are still pending eviction proceedings.

Taking note of the progress made so far, the High Court directed the concerned departments to complete the removal of all remaining encroachments within the given deadline. The Bench observed that no further judicial intervention was required at this stage but stressed that authorities must act responsibly and ensure strict compliance with forest conservation laws.

The court also highlighted the crucial role of the forest department and district administrations in protecting forest land from illegal occupation. Officials have been instructed to remain vigilant and strengthen monitoring mechanisms to prevent fresh encroachments in environmentally sensitive areas.

The issue of forest encroachment has remained a major concern in Himachal Pradesh for years, as illegal occupation not only damages forest ecosystems but also increases the risk of landslides, soil erosion, and environmental degradation in the mountainous region.

Environmental experts believe that timely action against encroachments is essential to preserve Himachal Pradesh’s natural resources and maintain ecological balance. The High Court’s latest direction is expected to speed up eviction drives and push local authorities to take stricter action against violators.

With the deadline now officially set, all eyes will be on the state administration to see how effectively it implements the court’s order in the coming months.
