According to official data released by the State Election Commission, a total of 79,676 candidates have filed nominations so far for the gram panchayat, panchayat samiti and zila parishad elections. Significantly, 37,114 nominations were submitted on the final day, making it the busiest day of the filing process.
However, the final tally is expected to increase further as nomination details from the tribal Pangi block in Chamba district are still being compiled.
Kangra District Tops Nomination Count
Among all districts, Kangra recorded the highest number of nominations with 14,590 candidates entering the electoral race. The district saw intense political activity at the village and block levels as candidates rushed to complete the nomination formalities before the deadline.
On the other hand, the remote tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti registered the lowest number of nominations, with only 493 candidates filing papers.
The contrast reflects both population differences and varying levels of political participation across districts.
Final Day Witnesses Huge Rush of Candidates
The nomination process for the Himachal Panchayat Elections was conducted over three days and saw a steady rise in participation.
- May 7: 16,891 nominations filed
- May 8: 25,671 nominations filed
- Final Day: 37,114 nominations filed
Election officials witnessed long queues outside nomination centers on the concluding day, especially in rural and semi-urban regions, as candidates hurried to submit their documents before the deadline.
Scrutiny and Withdrawal Dates Announced
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on May 12, where officials will verify documents and eligibility criteria of candidates.
Candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations till May 15. Once the withdrawal process is completed, election symbols will be allotted to the remaining candidates.
Polling to Be Held in Three Phases
The Panchayati Raj elections in Himachal Pradesh will be conducted in three phases on:
- May 26
- May 28
- May 30
The elections are considered crucial for strengthening local governance and rural development in the state. Political observers believe the high number of candidates indicates strong public interest in local administration and community leadership.
