In a surprising twist of weather, parts of Himachal Pradesh have witnessed rare snowfall in late April, even as large parts of northern India continue to battle an intense heatwave. The unusual weather shift has turned popular hill destinations into winter-like retreats, drawing a surge of tourists seeking relief from soaring temperatures.

High-altitude regions including Rohtang Pass, Shinkula, and Baralacha La have recorded fresh spells of snowfall, with temperatures dipping well below freezing point. In Koksar, located in the remote Lahaul and Spiti district, visitors were seen enjoying thick layers of fresh snow — a rare sight for this time of the year.

Local tourism operators Tashi and Tenzin highlighted the stark contrast, noting that while temperatures in the plains have crossed 40°C, upper regions of Manali are experiencing sub-zero conditions. Nearby Gramfu, just a few kilometers from Koksar, also received fresh snowfall, attracting adventure enthusiasts and trekkers eager to witness this unusual phenomenon.

The sudden change in weather has significantly boosted tourist footfall over the weekend. Thousands of travelers from neighboring states have flocked to the region, turning it into a hotspot for those looking to escape the relentless heat. Gaganpreet, a tourist from Punjab, described the experience as “like stepping onto another planet,” as he enjoyed building a snowman under clear skies that soon turned into light snowfall.

However, authorities have issued advisories to ensure safety and smooth management of the increasing tourist influx. Due to the scheduled visit of the President on April 29, tourist movement beyond Nehru Kund will be restricted. Officials have encouraged visitors to explore alternative attractions such as Hamta, Hadimba Temple, Vashisht Temple, Naggar, Kullu, and Manikaran.

This rare April snowfall has not only created breathtaking landscapes but also provided a much-needed escape for travelers struggling with extreme summer temperatures. For now, Himachal Pradesh continues to offer a unique blend of seasons — where winter meets summer in the most unexpected way.
