In a major relief for residents, Shimla is set to receive round-the-clock drinking water supply starting June, as the ambitious Shakroli water project nears completion.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced that the project, which lifts water from the Sutlej River to Shimla, is in its final stages and has already begun partial supply to the city.

Addressing the district-level Himachal Day function at the Ridge, he said that nearly ₹600 crore has been invested in the scheme. Once fully operational, it will supply approximately 67 million litres per day (MLD), ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply for the hill town, which has long struggled with water shortages.

Agnihotri further revealed that another major drinking water project worth ₹325.9 crore has been approved for drought-prone regions like Matiana and Theog. Of this, ₹277.86 crore has already been utilized, and work on the Kurpan Khad-based scheme is progressing rapidly, with completion expected soon.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, the Deputy CM highlighted that Himachal Pradesh was formed on April 15, 1948, just months after India’s independence. He paid tribute to the visionaries who contributed to the state’s formation, stating that Himachal has since carved a unique identity through consistent development.

In a political remark, Agnihotri criticized the previous BJP-led government, attributing the current financial challenges of the state to its economic policies.

He also raised concern over the growing drug menace among the youth and announced that the government will soon launch the “Khelo India – Chitta-Free Campaign.” The initiative aims to steer young people away from substance abuse and encourage a healthier, disciplined lifestyle through sports and positive engagement.

With the upcoming 24×7 water supply, Shimla is expected to witness a significant improvement in daily life, marking a major milestone in the city’s infrastructure development.
