Tension gripped the Gopalpur area of Mandi district on Thursday as members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest over the brutal murder of 19-year-old student activist Siya Guleria, raising serious concerns about women’s safety and the growing drug menace in the state.
Tension gripped the Gopalpur area of Mandi district on Thursday as members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest over the brutal murder of 19-year-old student activist Siya Guleria, raising serious concerns about women’s safety and the growing drug menace in the state.
Siya, a young college student and active SFI member, was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon while on her way to college. According to initial reports, the accused was under the influence of intoxicants, including alcohol and heroin, at the time of the incident.
Addressing the protest, SFI State President Anil Thakur termed the incident “deeply disturbing” and a reflection of the worsening law and order situation in Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized that such crimes highlight the urgent need for stronger policing and stricter action against drug abuse.
“This tragic incident exposes not just a failure in law enforcement, but also the alarming spread of drug addiction among youth,” Thakur said. “The accused being under the influence of substances makes the situation even more concerning.”
The organization has demanded immediate justice for Siya’s family, including the prompt release of the ₹10 lakh compensation announced by the state government. SFI leaders also urged authorities to take responsibility for the education of Siya’s younger sister.
Beyond immediate action, SFI highlighted the deeper roots of the problem. Leaders pointed out that rising unemployment, increasing frustration among youth, and the unchecked spread of drug networks have created a dangerous environment.
SFI State Secretary Sunny Seakta called for a comprehensive crackdown on drug mafias operating in the region. He stressed the need for long-term solutions, including better employment opportunities, improved access to education, and widespread awareness campaigns to combat drug abuse.
“The future of our youth is being destroyed by drugs. The government must act decisively before more lives are lost,” Seakta said.
The incident has sparked outrage across the region, with growing calls for accountability, stronger law enforcement, and urgent reforms to ensure the safety of women and youth in Himachal Pradesh.
