Rohtang’s Weather Crisis: River Risks and Safety Urgency Ahead:-

Due to the snow melting and rain in the district of Lahaul & Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, the water of the Chandra River got blocked at the Atal Tunnel Rohtang North Portal due to avalanches. Avalanches are natural phenomena that can be incredibly dangerous and destructive. Understanding their formation, types, and triggers, as well as taking appropriate safety precautions, can help minimize the risks associated with avalanches and ensure a safer experience in avalanche–prone areas. The river flow has now resumed. Residents and tourists are advised not to approach the river as the flow is quite fast at this time. The Atal Tunnel Rohtang area has recently experienced significant weather disturbances due to snow melting and heavy rainfall. This has led to several challenges in the region, particularly around Chandra River and the tunnel’s North Portal. The rise in temperatures has accelerated the melting of snow in higher altitudes. This rapid snowmelt has led to increased water flow in rivers and streams, including the Chandra River near Atal Tunnel. Global warming which is increasing day by day, i.e., the increase in carbon dioxide levels in the environment causes the melting of snow on a large scale. It is a very big problem which is faced by the world. In the future, it will cause harm to the world and also diseases relating to the respiration system will increase due to this.

The heavy rainfall in the district has further compounded the situation. The combination of melted snow and rainwater has created potential hazards like avalanches and landslides in the mountainous terrain. The Chandra River, which is a major tributary of the Chenab River, flows primarily in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Originating from the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas, it is one of the key rivers in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. This river eventually merges with the Bhaga River at Tandi to form the Chenab River. The Chandra River is not only significant for its natural beauty but also plays a vital role in supporting the local ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods of people living in the region. Blocked at the Atal Tunnel Rohtang North Portal due to avalanches. This blockage caused concerns as the water level started to rise rapidly. Fortunately, the river flow has now resumed after being blocked for a certain period. This has alleviated some of the immediate concerns regarding flooding in the area. Despite the resumption of river flow, it’s essential to note that the current is quite strong. This poses a risk to anyone approaching the river’s banks.

Local authorities and experts have issued a safety advisory for residents and tourists. They are strongly advised against venturing near the Chandra River due to its swift and forceful current. The adverse weather conditions have also impacted roadways in the district. There might be disruption, blockages, or damage to roads due to landslides or flooding. Lahaul & Spiti district police are on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation. They are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and manage any emergencies that may arise. Tourists planning to visit the Atal Tunnel Rohtang area are advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before traveling. It’s crucial to be aware of the risks and plan accordingly.

The combination of snow melting and rainfall increases the risk of avalanches and landslides in the mountainous regions. Travelers should be cautious and avoid areas prone to such hazards. The harsh weather patterns can also have implications for agriculture and local livelihoods. Farmers and locals might face challenges due to crop damage or transportation disruptions. The recent weather disturbances highlight the broader issues of climate change. Such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe, impacting both natural ecosystems and human activities. In conclusion, the Atal Tunnel Rohtang area is experiencing challenging weather conditions with snow melting, heavy rainfall, and river blockages. Residents, tourists, and authorities must remain vigilant, follow safety advisories, and be prepared for emergencies.
