The Himachal Pradesh Police have suspended Inspector Vijay Kumar, the in-charge and lead performer of the state’s celebrated police orchestra, “Harmony of the Pines,” over allegations of earning money through monetised social media content. The department has also launched a formal inquiry into the matter, marking one of the most significant disciplinary actions related to the state’s social media policy for police personnel.

The suspension order was issued after allegations surfaced that the officer was generating income of nearly ₹6,000 through his social media platforms. Officials believe the earnings may have violated the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, which regulate the conduct of government employees.

Director General of Police Ashok Tewari has directed a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-rank officer to conduct a departmental investigation. The inquiry report has been sought within three months, after which further action will be decided based on the findings.

Orchestra Brought National Recognition to Himachal Police

Founded in 1996, Harmony of the Pines has become one of the most recognised police orchestras in India. The group gained nationwide popularity after reaching the finals of the television reality show “Hunarbaaz: Desh Ki Shaan” in 2022. Since then, the orchestra has represented Himachal Pradesh Police at several prestigious national and international events and has regularly performed during important state functions.

Inspector Vijay Kumar also developed a strong digital presence over the years. According to reports, he has more than 1.8 lakh followers on Instagram and nearly 59,000 followers on Facebook, where he frequently shared photographs, music performances and videos.

Action Linked to Himachal Police Social Media Guidelines

The disciplinary action comes nearly a year after the Himachal Pradesh Police introduced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing the social media activities of its personnel.

Under these guidelines, police employees are prohibited from uploading reels, entertainment-focused videos, photographs or other content intended for self-promotion while in uniform. The SOPs also restrict personnel from publicly expressing religious, political, social or personal opinions in uniform or sharing content unrelated to official police duties.

The department stated that the policy was introduced to maintain the dignity, discipline and professional image associated with the police force.

Violation May Lead to Strict Disciplinary Action

According to the SOPs, any violation of the social media policy can be treated as gross misconduct. The rules allow the department to initiate disciplinary proceedings that may include a departmental inquiry, withholding of annual increments, demotion, suspension or even dismissal from service, depending on the seriousness of the violation.

The outcome of the ongoing inquiry against Inspector Vijay Kumar will determine the next course of action by the Himachal Pradesh Police.
