The third and final phase of Himachal Pradesh’s Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections is being held today across 1,189 gram panchayats, marking the conclusion of one of the state’s largest grassroots democratic exercises.

The final round of polling follows two successful phases conducted on May 26 and May 28, which recorded impressive voter turnouts of 78.9% and 80%, respectively. Election officials are optimistic that the final phase will witness a similarly strong participation despite forecasts of rain in several districts.

According to the State Election Commission, all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure smooth and peaceful voting across polling stations. Polling personnel have already reached designated booths, and authorities have put in place measures to facilitate voting in rural and remote areas.

Among the districts, Kangra is witnessing the highest number of gram panchayats going to polls, with voting taking place in 277 panchayats. Mandi follows with 183 panchayats, while Shimla has 141 panchayats participating in the final phase. In contrast, the least number of panchayats are voting in Lahaul and Spiti (14) and Kinnaur (26).

The elections have generated significant enthusiasm among rural voters, with women, youth, and senior citizens actively participating in the earlier phases. However, weather conditions could influence voter turnout today, particularly among elderly residents, as the India Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the state.

With polling set to conclude by the end of the day, political focus will quickly shift to the counting of votes and declaration of results on May 31. Results for Municipal Corporations, Zila Parishads, and Panchayat Samities are scheduled to be announced tomorrow.

The Municipal Corporation elections are attracting special attention as they were contested on party symbols and are widely viewed as a key political indicator ahead of the upcoming Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. Political observers believe the results could offer valuable insights into the public mood and the strength of major political parties at the grassroots level.

Meanwhile, the Zila Parishad elections remain equally significant. Although these contests were largely fought on non-party lines, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded official candidates in several areas, while the Congress chose not to formally endorse candidates.

As Himachal Pradesh completes the final phase of PRI elections, all eyes are now on the results, which are expected to shape the state’s political narrative in the months leading up to the next Assembly polls.
