Himachal Pradesh has registered a remarkable improvement in the national education rankings, securing the 6th position in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2024-25 released by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The hill state has also emerged as the third-best performing state in the country, marking a significant rise from its 13th rank in 2023-24 and 21st rank in 2022-23.

The latest achievement highlights the rapid transformation taking place in Himachal Pradesh’s education sector over the past three years. The state has been placed in the prestigious “Prachesta-2” category, which is considered the second-highest performance category in the national rankings.

Reacting to the achievement, Education Minister Rohit Thakur described the ranking as a proud moment for the state government and the education department. He said Himachal Pradesh has consistently improved its performance across national education surveys and assessments.

According to the PGI report, Himachal Pradesh scored 659.2 points out of 1,000, showing a massive improvement of 85.4 points compared to the previous year. The report evaluates states and union territories based on two major categories — outcomes and governance & management — which are further divided into six important domains.

One of the biggest strengths of Himachal Pradesh in the report was the “Equity” domain, where the state scored an impressive 90.5%. This category measures inclusive and equitable education for students across different sections of society. The state also performed strongly in “Access” and “Teacher Education & Training,” scoring 86.6% and 80.3% respectively.

A major improvement was also recorded in the crucial “Learning Outcomes and Quality” section. Himachal Pradesh improved its score from 52.4 points in 2023-24 to 117.19 points in the latest report, indicating better academic performance and stronger educational standards in schools.

However, the report also highlighted areas where the state still needs improvement. In the “Governance Processes” domain, Himachal Pradesh scored 49.9 out of 130 points. This category includes important indicators such as Aadhaar seeding, digital attendance systems, internet-enabled school processes, and administrative efficiency.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur credited the state’s progress to teamwork, better resource management, and the government’s continuous focus on quality education. He stated that while significant progress has been achieved, the government is committed to further strengthening the education system in the coming years.

The steady rise in national education rankings has positioned Himachal Pradesh as one of India’s fastest-improving states in the education sector, drawing attention to its policy reforms and focus on learning outcomes.
