The Congress party delivered an impressive performance in the urban local body elections across Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra and Chamba districts, securing decisive victories in several municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The results are being viewed as a significant political boost for the ruling party ahead of the upcoming Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections next year.
In one of the most striking outcomes, Congress-backed candidates dominated the Kangra Municipal Council by winning eight out of nine wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure just one seat, marking a major setback for the opposition in the region. Political observers believe the Congress campaign successfully connected with voters by focusing on civic issues, local development, and grassroots outreach.
The party also performed strongly in the Dehra Municipal Council, where Congress-supported candidates won five of the seven wards, while the BJP secured two seats. Similar trends were witnessed in Jawalamukhi, where Congress-backed candidates emerged victorious in seven out of nine wards, further strengthening the party’s urban presence in Kangra district.
In Shahpur Nagar Panchayat, Congress candidates won five of the seven wards, leaving the BJP with only two seats. The results reflected growing voter confidence in the state government’s development agenda and welfare initiatives.
However, the BJP found some relief in the Nagrota Bagwan Municipal Council. BJP-backed candidates won four out of seven wards, narrowly edging past Congress, which secured three seats. The result prevented a complete sweep by Congress in the district and provided the BJP with a much-needed morale boost.
Reacting to the results, Congress leader and Shahpur MLA Kewal Singh Pathania said the outcome reflected public support for the policies of the state government led by Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He credited party workers for running an aggressive grassroots campaign focused on development and public welfare.
Congress Edges Ahead in Chamba Civic Polls
The Congress continued its strong showing in Chamba district as well. In the Dalhousie Municipal Council, Congress-backed candidates secured a narrow majority by winning five out of nine wards, while BJP-supported candidates won four seats. The contest remained intense until the final phase of campaigning, with both parties investing heavily in voter outreach.
In Chowari Nagar Panchayat, the election produced a fractured mandate. Congress-backed candidates won three wards, BJP candidates secured two, and Independents captured the remaining two seats, making local political equations more complex.
The Chamba Municipal Council witnessed one of the closest contests of the elections. Congress and BJP candidates won five wards each, while an Independent candidate secured victory in one ward. The result drew attention because Chamba is considered the political home turf of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan.
Chamba District Congress Committee president Surjeet Bharmouri described the results as a sign of increasing support for Congress in urban regions. According to party leaders, welfare schemes and infrastructure-focused governance helped the Congress improve its performance among urban voters.
Close Political Contest in Sirmaur District
The urban local body elections in Sirmaur district witnessed a tightly fought contest between Congress and BJP. In the historic Nahan Municipal Council, regarded as one of the oldest municipal bodies in the country, the BJP won seven seats while Congress secured six, highlighting the neck-and-neck battle between the two parties.
Congress gained the upper hand in Rajgarh Nagar Panchayat by winning five of the seven seats, while BJP-backed candidates managed to secure three seats.
Meanwhile, the Paonta Sahib Municipal Council delivered a highly interesting verdict with Independent candidates emerging as kingmakers. Out of the 13 wards, Congress-backed candidates won four seats, BJP-supported candidates also secured four seats, while Independents claimed victory in five wards. The results have made Independents crucial in determining the future leadership of the civic body.
Political Significance of the Results
The urban local body election results are being seen as an important indicator of the political mood in Himachal Pradesh. Congress appears to have strengthened its support base in several urban regions, while the BJP still managed to retain influence in select councils.
Political analysts believe the civic poll outcomes could influence campaign strategies for the upcoming Assembly elections, as both parties are expected to intensify their focus on local governance, infrastructure, and voter engagement in the coming months.
