Himachal Pradesh Crackdown: Mandi Police Destroy Over 5,900 Illegal Opium Plants, Recover Charas in Multiple NDPS Raids
In a major crackdown against illegal narcotics cultivation, police in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district destroyed more than 5,900 illegally grown opium plants during a special anti-drug campaign conducted on Sunday. The operations were carried out across multiple locations in the district as part of an intensified drive against drug cultivation and trafficking.

According to Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, police teams launched coordinated raids in the remote village of Dhloot under the jurisdiction of Aut police station. During the first operation, officers found illegal opium cultivation spread over nearly 10 biswa of land. A total of 3,220 opium plants were recovered from the site.
Police officials said the plants were seized and later destroyed following legal procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A case has been registered against unidentified individuals, and investigations are currently underway to identify those involved in the cultivation.
In another raid conducted in the same village, the police discovered an additional illegal opium plantation spread across approximately nine biswa of land. During the operation, officers recovered 2,751 opium plants. The crop was also destroyed after seizure, while another case under the NDPS Act was registered against unknown persons.
The anti-drug operation was not limited to opium cultivation alone. In a separate action, a joint team of STF Centre Range Mandi at Bajaura and Balh Police intercepted a Tata Ace vehicle during naka checking at Nagchala. During the search operation, police recovered 264 grams of charas from the vehicle.
Following the recovery, police registered a case under Sections 20 and 29 of the NDPS Act and arrested two accused, identified as Ravinder Kumar and Vijay Kumar.
Meanwhile, another charas recovery case was registered at Sadar Mandi police station after a police team from Pandoh Police Post intercepted a youth near the Transit Camp area at Sayogi during routine patrolling and vehicle checking.
Police recovered 265 grams of charas from a bag carried by the accused, identified as Anshu. Officials confirmed that all arrested individuals are being produced before the competent court for further legal proceedings.
The Mandi district police stated that the anti-drug campaign will continue with increased surveillance and strict action against narcotics cultivation and smuggling networks operating in the region.
