In a significant push towards strengthening agricultural infrastructure and rural development, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple projects worth 34.31 crore at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry.
The Chief Minister inaugurated a newly constructed hostel at the College of Horticulture and Forestry in Neri, Hamirpur, built at a cost of 3.63 crore. The facility will accommodate 107 students, providing improved residential support for aspiring agriculture and forestry professionals.
Further strengthening agricultural outreach, Sukhu also inaugurated the administrative building of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Tabo, Lahaul and Spiti, developed with an investment of ₹1.48 crore. This center is expected to play a crucial role in disseminating modern farming knowledge to local farmers.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones for several key projects aimed at empowering women and enhancing campus facilities. These include two working women’s hostels at the Neri and Khaggal colleges in Hamirpur district, with a combined investment of over ₹17 crore. Each hostel will accommodate 50 residents, promoting safe and accessible living spaces for working women.
Additionally, a larger working women’s hostel with a capacity of 100 boarders will be constructed at the Nauni campus itself, with an estimated cost of ₹11.95 crore.
Addressing the gathering, Sukhu emphasized that natural farming represents the future of Himachal Pradesh. He highlighted the pivotal role of Nauni University in guiding farmers towards sustainable and chemical-free agricultural practices.
Sharing key figures, the Chief Minister noted that over two lakh farmers in the state have registered for natural farming, with approximately 1.98 lakh already receiving certification. This marks a growing shift towards eco-friendly agriculture across the region.
He further underlined that agriculture continues to be the backbone of Himachal Pradesh’s economy. With nearly 90% of the population residing in rural areas and around 53.95% directly dependent on agriculture, the government remains committed to introducing progressive, farmer-centric policies.
The latest developments signal a strong focus on infrastructure, sustainability, and inclusive growth—key pillars in transforming the state’s rural economy.
