In a politically charged move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Himachal Pradesh has announced a statewide ‘Jan Aakrosh Padyatra’ on April 23, intensifying its attack on the Indian National Congress over the ongoing controversy surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill.

State BJP president Rajeev Bindal said the padyatra is not just a protest, but a “people’s movement” aimed at defending women’s dignity, rights, and political representation. According to him, thousands of women are expected to participate, turning the march into a powerful public statement.

Bindal accused Congress of maintaining an “anti-women mindset,” alleging that the party delayed the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill for decades and later opposed it when it finally gained momentum. He claimed that recent developments around the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam have exposed the Congress party’s true stance on women’s empowerment.

Highlighting the Centre’s efforts, Bindal praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for convening a special session of Parliament to push forward women’s reservation in legislatures. He alleged that Congress and its allies failed to support this initiative, thereby denying women their rightful place in governance.

“The Modi government is committed to strengthening democracy by ensuring women’s participation, while the Congress is trying to block this progress,” Bindal said.

Apart from the reservation issue, the BJP leader also welcomed the announcement of upcoming urban local body elections, calling it a “victory for democracy and judicial accountability.” At the same time, he accused the state Congress government of attempting to delay these elections.

Looking ahead, Bindal expressed confidence that Panchayati Raj elections would be announced soon. He added that the people of Himachal Pradesh are ready to respond strongly to what he described as the Congress government’s “anti-people policies.”

As political tensions rise, the upcoming padyatra is expected to become a significant flashpoint in Himachal’s political landscape, especially with women’s representation emerging as a central issue.
