HPBOSE Class 10 Result 2026: Students Failing in Two Subjects Can Appear for Second Exam, Board Issues New Guidelines
In a major relief for thousands of students across Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) has announced that Class 10 students who failed in up to two subjects will be allowed to appear in the second examination.
In a major relief for thousands of students across Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) has announced that Class 10 students who failed in up to two subjects will be allowed to appear in the second examination.
The new guidelines were issued by Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education after the declaration of the Matric examination results conducted in March 2026.
HPBOSE Chairman Rajesh Sharma said the board has divided students into multiple categories based on their performance in the annual examination to ensure deserving students get another opportunity to pass without losing an academic year.
Essential Improvement Category Explained
According to the board, students who have passed at least three out of the five compulsory subjects will be placed under the “Essential Improvement” category.
These students will be eligible to appear in the second examination for the two subjects in which they failed. If a student clears both subjects, they will be declared pass in the Class 10 board examination.
However, if the student clears only one subject, the result will fall under the compartment category. Students failing to clear both subjects in the second exam will be shifted to the “Essential Repeat” category.
The board has also allowed students under the Essential Improvement category to improve marks in one subject in which they have already secured passing marks.
Optional Improvement for Students Seeking Better Scores
HPBOSE also introduced the “Optional Improvement” category for students who have passed all compulsory subjects but want to improve their overall percentage.
Under this category, students can reappear in a maximum of three compulsory subjects to improve their scores in the second examination.
Education experts believe this move could help students improve their academic records for future admissions and competitive opportunities.
Who Falls Under the Essential Repeat Category?
The board clarified that students who failed in more than two compulsory subjects will not be eligible for the second examination.
Such candidates will be placed in the “Essential Repeat” category and will have to appear again in the main board examination during the next academic session.
Meanwhile, students whose results were declared under the compartment category will continue to appear in the second examination as per compartment rules set by HPBOSE.
Relief for Students and Parents
The latest decision by HPBOSE is being seen as a student-friendly step, especially for those who narrowly missed passing the Class 10 examination.
With the second examination opportunity, many students now have a chance to save their academic year and improve their results without waiting for the next annual board exams.
