Himachal Pradesh Local Elections 2026 to Act as ‘Semi-Final’ for 2027 Polls, Says Jai Ram Thakur

Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday described the upcoming urban local body and panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh as a crucial “semi-final” ahead of the 2027 Vidhan Sabha elections.

Expressing confidence in his party’s prospects, Thakur stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is fully prepared and expects to secure a decisive mandate in both the local elections and the 2027 Assembly polls.

Welcoming the announcement of the election schedule, Thakur emphasized the need for a transparent and fair electoral process. He raised concerns over what he termed as “unnecessary delays” in conducting the elections, attributing them to a “lax approach” by the government machinery and alleged political interference. According to him, such delays have weakened grassroots democratic institutions in the state.

“The people of Himachal Pradesh have already made up their minds. They want to bring back development and ensure governance without discrimination,” Thakur said, taking a direct swipe at the ruling Congress government.

He further claimed that various sections of society—including women, farmers, orchardists, and unemployed youth—are feeling disillusioned due to unfulfilled electoral promises. This growing dissatisfaction, he added, will reflect in the voting pattern in the upcoming elections.

Highlighting BJP’s preparedness, Thakur asserted that the party would deliver a strong performance and give the Congress a “decisive defeat” in the local body polls.

Political observers believe that these elections will not only shape local governance but also set the tone for the high-stakes 2027 Assembly elections in the hill state.
