The political temperature in Himachal Pradesh heated up on Friday as a sharp face-off unfolded between the ruling Congress government and the BJP over the state’s law and order situation.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu firmly pushed back against the Opposition’s allegations, making it clear that his government is not going soft on crime. He emphasized that strict action is being taken against offenders—no matter their political connections. According to Sukhu, law enforcement agencies are actively doing their job, and several accused individuals have already been arrested and sent to jail.

This response came during a heated Assembly session after Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur moved a cut motion while discussing budget allocations for the police department. However, the motion was eventually rejected by voice vote, allowing the government to pass the demands for grants.

⚠️ BJP Raises Serious Concerns

Earlier in the debate, Jai Ram Thakur didn’t hold back. He accused the Congress-led government of allowing the law and order situation to deteriorate significantly since coming into power.

Backing his claims with figures, Thakur pointed out that:

  • 66 young lives have been lost due to drug overdoses
  • Over 6,200 cases registered under the NDPS Act
  • Around 1,500 people reported missing

He described these numbers as deeply worrying for a relatively small state like Himachal Pradesh. Thakur also highlighted rising incidents of murder, kidnappings, firing, and threats from organized gangs, suggesting that public safety is under serious threat.

🗣️ Other BJP Leaders Join the Attack

Several BJP leaders echoed these concerns during the discussion, intensifying the political debate.

  • Vipin Parmar and Bikram Singh questioned whether law enforcement is effectively controlling rising crime.
  • Satpal Satti raised alarms about increasing gang activity in Una, even claiming that locals are receiving ransom calls.
  • Satti also alleged irregularities in a controversial land deal in Solan involving more than 250 bighas, hinting that the investigation may have been stalled.
  • Meanwhile, Randhir Sharma criticized the government for not appointing permanent officials to key positions like Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, arguing that leadership instability could weaken governance.

🛡️ CM Sukhu’s Firm Stand

Despite the barrage of criticism, CM Sukhu stood his ground. He rejected all allegations of political vendetta and reassured that the government remains committed to transparency and accountability.

“Anyone involved in corruption or illegal activities like mining will face strict action,” Sukhu said, adding that those who feel wronged are free to approach the courts.

📊 The Bigger Picture

The debate highlights a growing political divide in Himachal Pradesh, where law and order has now become a key issue. While the Opposition continues to raise concerns backed by data and incidents, the government insists that the situation is under control and that necessary action is being taken.

As the political battle intensifies, the real question remains—how safe do people in Himachal Pradesh actually feel today?
