Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday met Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Bengaluru to discuss ways to strengthen natural farming practices and improve the welfare and protection of stray cattle in Himachal Pradesh.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to encourage farmers to shift towards chemical-free and sustainable farming methods. He said Himachal Pradesh is actively promoting natural farming across rural areas and providing financial support to farmers adopting eco-friendly agricultural practices.
Sukhu stated that the government is offering Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops grown through natural farming methods, a move aimed at improving farmers’ income while ensuring healthier produce for consumers. The initiative has reportedly received a positive response from farming communities in the state.
The Chief Minister also discussed the government’s focus on cattle welfare, especially the rehabilitation and care of stray cattle. He said that under the Gopal Yojana, financial assistance for stray cattle kept in private cow shelters has been increased from Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 per cattle every month.
According to Sukhu, several new proposals related to cattle welfare and rehabilitation have also been included in the Himachal Pradesh Budget 2026-27. He added that the government has established large cow shelters and cow sanctuaries in different parts of the state over the past few years.
In a major step towards strengthening these initiatives, the Chief Minister said reputed NGOs, voluntary organisations, and industrial groups may soon be allowed to adopt government-run cow shelters and sanctuaries to improve their management and care systems.
During his visit to the ashram, Sukhu also interacted with people from Himachal Pradesh working there and enquired about their wellbeing. He later participated in ‘gau seva’ activities at the ashram.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar appreciated the Himachal Pradesh Government’s efforts towards promoting natural farming and taking meaningful steps for cattle welfare in the state.
