In a development that could bring much-needed relief to daily commuters, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has stepped in to closely monitor the progress of the long-awaited Slapper–Tattapani road widening project.

During a recent hearing, a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Bipin Chander Negi directed the state government to submit a detailed status report on the project. The court specifically asked for clarity on the tender process and when the remaining work will begin.

The case, being heard as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), highlights growing public concern over delays in improving this crucial road stretch, which connects several key areas and is often plagued by narrow passages and traffic issues.

There was, however, some positive news shared in court. The Union Government informed the bench that the project has already received the necessary environmental clearances. Notably, final approval for the diversion of over 33 hectares of forest land was granted earlier this year under the Forest Conservation Act by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

This clearance was a major hurdle, and its approval signals a green light for faster execution of the project.

On the ground, progress has already begun in parts. Officials told the court that road improvement and widening work is underway on certain stretches. Meanwhile, the tender process for the remaining segment—from Km 20.500 to Km 31.300—is currently in progress.

Despite these developments, the High Court emphasized the need for accountability and timely execution. It has now asked the state government to provide a comprehensive update, including a clear timeline for completing the pending work.

The matter will be taken up again on May 5, where further progress will be reviewed.

For residents and travelers who rely on this route, the project holds significant importance. Once completed, the widened road is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance overall safety.
