A disturbing incident outside Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS) in Shimla has sparked outrage and concern after a stray dog was seen carrying a human foot in its mouth near the hospital premises. A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, leaving residents shocked and demanding accountability.

What Exactly Happened?

According to hospital authorities, the human limb belonged to a patient who had undergone an above-knee amputation on February 19. After the surgery, the amputated limb was reportedly packed in a designated biomedical waste bag and kept inside the biomedical waste storage complex, following standard procedure.

However, things took a serious turn on the night of February 21.

A fact-finding committee constituted by the hospital revealed that sanitation workers allegedly left the biomedical waste complex door open and unattended. This lapse in supervision allowed a stray dog to enter the area and pull out the limb.

Panic Among Locals After Video Goes Viral

Locals living near the hospital expressed fear and anger after the video surfaced. Many questioned how such sensitive biomedical waste could be left exposed, calling it a major lapse in safety and hygiene protocols.

“It’s not just about negligence; it’s about public health and dignity,” said a local resident, reflecting the growing concern in the community.

Hospital Responds With Show-Cause Notices

Following the incident, the hospital management issued show-cause notices to the sanitation workers involved, along with their supervisor. The committee report mentioned that staff members attempted to trace the missing body part but were unsuccessful.

Authorities have now directed the sanitation contractor to strictly ensure proper storage and handling of biomedical waste. The biomedical waste disposal agency has also been instructed to clear waste promptly to prevent such incidents in the future.

Possible Disciplinary Action Ahead

Hospital officials confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken after reviewing the responses submitted by the sanitation workers and supervisor. The administration has assured the public that strict measures will be implemented to avoid any recurrence.

This incident raises serious questions about biomedical waste management practices in healthcare institutions and highlights the need for tighter monitoring, especially in sensitive facilities like super-specialty hospitals.

As investigations continue, residents of Shimla await concrete action — hoping that such a shocking episode never repeats itself.
