Himachal Pradesh Weather : Shimla receives season’s first snowfall, three-month dry spell ends across Himachal
Shimla and several parts of Himachal Pradesh witnessed the season’s first widespread snowfall on Monday, bringing much-awaited relief after a prolonged three-month dry spell across the state.
Shimla and several parts of Himachal Pradesh witnessed the season’s first widespread snowfall on Monday, bringing much-awaited relief after a prolonged three-month dry spell across the state.
While higher reaches of Lahaul and Spiti and parts of Chamba had experienced early snowfall earlier this winter, most mid and high mountain regions had remained dry until now. Apart from the upper areas of Shimla and Kinnaur districts, the state capital also received fresh snowfall after a gap of nearly two years, covering the town in a thin white blanket.
Upper areas of Shimla district, including Chopal, Rampur, Narkanda, Khapapathar and Kufri, reported steady snowfall since morning.
Heavy snow accumulation led to the closure of roads in areas such as Deha and Chopal, disrupting vehicular movement. Power supply was also affected at several places.
The Meteorological Department had earlier issued an orange alert for widespread snowfall and rainfall on January 22 and 23, with precipitation likely to continue through the day.
The fresh spell of snow and rain has brought relief and cheer to farmers and fruit growers who were facing stress due to extreme dry conditions. The snowfall is also expected to boost tourism in the hill state.
