The Jal Shakti Department has begun work to change the direction of sewerage flow in Kullu town to provide a permanent solution to the long-standing problem of overflowing sewerage, particularly around the Regional Hospital, Kullu.

Under the project, the sewerage flow from the hospital area is being diverted towards Banga Traders, and a new 450-metre sewer line is being laid. The work is aimed at preventing sewage from overflowing in inspection chambers and improving sanitation for residents, hospital patients and commuters.

At present, sewerage overflow near the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited’s Superintending Engineer’s office has created unhygienic conditions. Patients visiting the Regional Hospital, students of Government College, employees of the Public Works Department and the Mini Secretariat, along with the general public, have been facing foul odour and insanitary surroundings, with vehicles forced to pass through sewage-affected stretches.

To address the issue, the department has prepared a detailed plan and started excavating the hospital road. Under AMRUT Mission Phase-II, the sewerage line is being rerouted while remaining connected to the sewage treatment plant at Lankabekar. Once completed, sewage overflow in the hospital area, electricity board office surroundings and adjoining roads is expected to stop.

Junior Engineer Labh Singh said complaints regarding overflowing sewerage chambers were frequent in the hospital area, prompting the decision to change the flow direction. He said several lakhs of rupees were being spent under AMRUT Phase-II to ensure a long-term solution.

In addition, the Jal Shakti Department has announced Rs 3 lakh for repairing damaged sewerage infrastructure in Kullu town. As part of this work, a retaining wall will be constructed in the Truck Union area of Akhara Bazaar, for which tenders have been invited. The construction is expected to be completed within two months of allotment.

Executive Engineer Amit Kumar said the sewerage repair work is being carried out at a cost of Rs 3 lakh. He added that safety walls are also being constructed at Khoriropa and Hanumani Bagh to reduce flood risks. The department is simultaneously strengthening damaged drinking water schemes affected during last year’s monsoon.

With these measures, residents are expected to get relief from persistent sewerage and drinking water problems in the coming days.
