New Delhi : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently visited Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, in New Delhi. The meeting was a crucial step towards addressing the state’s ongoing challenges in industrial growth and regional development. During the visit, the Chief Minister discussed a range of proposals aimed at boosting Himachal Pradesh’s economic development through federal support.
Special Industrial Package for Himachal Pradesh
The primary agenda of the meeting was CM Sukhu’s appeal for a special industrial package for Himachal Pradesh, similar to those granted to Jammu and Kashmir and the North-Eastern states. Sukhu emphasized that the unique geographical and logistical challenges faced by Himachal Pradesh—primarily its hilly terrain—warranted special provisions to encourage industrial growth.
In his discussions, Sukhu pointed out that such a package would help mitigate the additional costs associated with setting up industries in the region and create a more competitive environment for businesses. He stressed that without financial incentives tailored to the state’s challenges, Himachal Pradesh’s potential for economic growth could remain untapped.
Revival of Transport Subsidy Scheme
Another significant issue raised by CM Sukhu was the revival of the transport subsidy scheme for hilly areas. The Chief Minister explained that the high transportation costs incurred due to the state’s rugged terrain are a major hurdle for industries and businesses. The re-implementation of this scheme, Sukhu argued, would reduce logistical expenses, encourage industrial production, and enhance exports from Himachal Pradesh.
“The revival of the transport subsidy scheme will provide industries with much-needed financial relief, allowing them to become more competitive on a national and international level,” said Sukhu during the meeting.
Funding for Critical Infrastructure Projects
CM Sukhu also sought funding for critical industrial infrastructure development projects in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in the areas of quality testing and certification labs. These labs would play a vital role in ensuring that the state’s products meet national and international standards, thereby promoting exports.
He also raised the issue of pending capital subsidies under the Industrial Development Scheme (IDS) and requested that unresolved cases be expedited. These subsidies are essential for fostering the growth of new industries and enhancing existing industrial capacities in the state.
Assurance of Support from Union Minister
Union Minister Piyush Goyal responded positively to CM Sukhu’s proposals, assuring him that the central government would carefully review the issues raised. Goyal acknowledged the unique challenges faced by Himachal Pradesh and promised that the government would extend its full support to the state’s industrial and economic development.
“We understand the geographical constraints of Himachal Pradesh, and we are committed to providing the necessary support for the state’s growth. All the points raised by CM Sukhu will be thoroughly examined, and we will ensure that suitable measures are taken,” said Piyush Goyal.
Path Ahead for Himachal’s Economic Growth
The meeting between CM Sukhu and Minister Piyush Goyal marked a significant step towards addressing the economic challenges of Himachal Pradesh. The state, with its rich natural resources and growing potential, stands to benefit greatly from the central government’s support in terms of industrial packages, subsidies, and infrastructure development.
The discussions are expected to set the stage for Himachal Pradesh to make strides in its industrial development, ultimately contributing to the creation of jobs, improvement in infrastructure, and an overall boost in the state’s economic prospects.
As the talks continue, the state government, led by CM Sukhu, remains hopeful that the necessary interventions will be made to support and sustain the growth of industries in Himachal Pradesh, ensuring a brighter future for its residents.
