Palampur is set to receive a major boost to its sports infrastructure with the Central Government approving the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor sports stadium in the city. The ambitious project will be developed on around 10 kanals of land near the Tea Board office and is expected to give young athletes access to modern training facilities closer to home.
The proposed indoor sports complex will feature facilities for several sporting disciplines under one roof. Apart from indoor game courts, the project will also include a swimming pool and a shooting range, giving sportspersons access to specialised training facilities that are currently not readily available in the city.
The facility is expected to benefit athletes from Palampur and other parts of Kangra district, many of whom currently have to travel to larger cities for professional training.
Centre Approves Project, Releases Rs 5 Crore
Palampur MLA Ashish Butail said the proposal for the indoor stadium was submitted by the Palampur Municipal Corporation through the Himachal Pradesh Government to the Central Government.
According to Butail, the Union Government has approved the project and released Rs 5 crore for its execution.
Describing the project as a landmark development for Palampur, the MLA said the proposed stadium would become an important public asset and help address the city’s long-standing shortage of modern sports infrastructure.
The project is also expected to create better opportunities for young athletes who aspire to pursue sports professionally and compete at state and national-level events.
Young Athletes May No Longer Need to Travel to Other Cities
For several aspiring sportspersons in Palampur and surrounding areas, access to specialised training has remained a major challenge. Swimming and shooting are among the disciplines where athletes often need to travel to bigger cities to access proper facilities and coaching.
The proposed stadium could help change that situation by bringing multiple sports facilities to one location.
Former Palampur Mayor Gopal Nag and Block Congress Committee president Trilok Kumar welcomed the announcement and said the project would help fill a significant gap in the city’s sports infrastructure.
Palampur Could Emerge as a Major Sports Hub
Once completed, the indoor stadium is expected to become one of the most important sports facilities in the region. The availability of modern infrastructure could encourage more young people to take up sports and provide local athletes with improved opportunities to train and compete.
With facilities such as indoor courts, a swimming pool and a shooting range planned as part of the project, the stadium could strengthen Palampur’s position as an emerging sports and fitness hub in Himachal Pradesh.
For local sportspersons, the project could mean more than just a new building. It could bring professional training opportunities closer to home and give the next generation of athletes a stronger platform to pursue their sporting ambitions.
