The tragic death of Shaurya Chakra awardee MARCOS Commando Amit Singh Rana in a road accident in Himachal Pradesh has reignited concerns over road safety on the state’s hilly routes. His sister has now written an emotional letter to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, urging the government to strengthen road safety measures and prevent similar tragedies.

Amit Singh Rana, 32, lost his life on the night of June 2 after his car plunged into a deep gorge near Laharu on the Khundian-Lagdu road in Kangra district. The elite naval commando was returning to his native village during a 40-day leave to spend time with his family.

According to his sister Pankaj, Amit had briefly stopped on the way to meet a friend but never made it home. She said the accident occurred on a stretch of road where there were no crash barriers, and he was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

While the family continues to cope with the loss of a decorated soldier, Pankaj said they are not looking to blame anyone. Instead, she has made a heartfelt appeal to the state government to ensure that no other family has to experience such pain.

In her letter to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, she requested the immediate installation of crash barriers, warning signs, timely road maintenance and regular safety inspections on the Khundian-Lagdu road as well as other vulnerable hill roads across Himachal Pradesh.

Amit Singh Rana is survived by his wife, a three-and-a-half-year-old son, his parents and two sisters.

Highlighting the larger issue, Pankaj wrote that while the family would have accepted the loss if Amit had died while defending the nation’s borders, it is heartbreaking to lose such a brave soldier because of unsafe road conditions.

“We cannot bring Amit back, but if his story helps save even one life, another family may be spared this lifelong pain,” she said in her appeal, which was also shared with the Chief Secretary and Public Works Department officials.

Road safety remains a serious concern in Himachal Pradesh. Official data shows that 806 people lost their lives in 1,932 road accidents across the state last year. This year alone, 189 people had died in 897 accidents by May 31. Districts such as Chamba, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Kullu and Shimla continue to witness a high number of fatal crashes, largely due to narrow and challenging mountain roads.

The incident has once again brought attention to the urgent need for improved road infrastructure and stronger safety measures across Himachal Pradesh’s hill roads, with many hoping that the commando’s tragic death will lead to meaningful action and help prevent future accidents.
