In a significant political development in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, the Congress party has taken control of the Block Development Council (BDC) in Tissa after winning both the Chairman and Deputy Chairman posts. The outcome is being viewed as a major setback for the BJP in the Churah Assembly constituency, traditionally considered one of its strongholds.
The elections for the key BDC positions were held on Tuesday, where Congress-backed candidates emerged victorious with a clear margin. Chain Lal was elected as the new Chairman of the Tissa BDC after defeating BJP-supported candidate Hilo Devi. Meanwhile, Congress nominee Shakuntla Devi secured the Deputy Chairman post by defeating BJP-backed candidate Mehro.
Both Congress candidates received 10 votes each, while their BJP rivals managed to secure only eight votes, reflecting a shift in local political dynamics.
Following the announcement of the results, Congress workers and supporters celebrated the victory enthusiastically by distributing sweets and congratulating the newly elected representatives.
Speaking after his victory, newly elected BDC Chairman Chain Lal expressed gratitude to the elected members for placing their trust in him. He stated that his primary focus would be the overall development of the Tissa block, addressing public concerns, and resolving issues faced by local panchayats.
“I will work collectively with all elected members to ensure balanced and inclusive development in the region,” Chain Lal said.
Deputy Chairman Shakuntla Devi also thanked the members for their support and reaffirmed her commitment to meeting the expectations of the people. She pledged to contribute actively towards strengthening development initiatives across the block.
Political observers believe the Congress’s success in Tissa could have wider implications for the Churah Assembly constituency, especially with the next Assembly elections expected next year. The victory is being seen as a morale booster for the Congress and a challenge for the BJP in a region where it has traditionally enjoyed strong support.
